Music of DCC
Joe, what was your soundtrack when coming up with this game? What are you DM's listening to when writing up your campaigns? I'm thinking anything from the late 1970's is fair game. I'll start - To me, DCC is:

Re: Music of DCC
I'm not aware of ever hearing the name of this band. The music, and I tried several on YouTube, remind me of cheesy '70s & '80s B-grade sci-fi/fantasy movies.

Re: Music of DCC
Great question! I actually wrote at least half the manuscript listening to a 3-CD mix Doug put together called simply "DCC RPG." iTunes never properly imported the songs so I don't even know what half of it is...but after a string of cons and games and emails and a trip to LA and then a camping trip in the desert, Doug had somehow figured out the exact vibe I was going for, enough that he put together this great mix. It's half weird medieval music, half 1970's rock. I'll have to get the song titles from him at some point. That playlist led down some different corridors...and now my main inspirational playlist is what follows...usually randomized, not necessarily in this order... I listen to a lot of other music (Phish is my favorite overall) but this is specifically what I listen to in order to get in the mood for DCC RPG.

Great taste in tunes, there. Since I like all the songs I recognize, I'll have to look up the ones I don't!

My first post round here (hey all), this was the thread that grabbed my attention so if anybody
still takes a look at this I'd like to say:
Black Sabbath, especially first album and Paranoid
Uriah Heep, especially Demons & Wizards and The Magician's Birthday
Hawkwind, especially Hall Of The Mountain Grill and Warrior On The Edge Of Time
(Michael Moorcock is ON the album)
Rush, especially Caress Of Steel and Fly By Night
(check out 'The Necromancer' and 'By-Tor & The Snow Dog')
Blue Oyster Cult, especially first 3 albums and Cultosaurus Erectus ('Black Blade')

Re: Music of DCC
I listen to the following bands, for inspiration:
Bal-Sagoth (symphonic black metal with lots of narrating and howardian/lovecraftian lyrics)
Slough Feg (early albums, which had covers made by Erol Otus himself)
The Sword (lots of howardian themes here)
Bathory (later, viking albums, like Blood Fire Death, Nordland I-II)
Therion (symphonic metal with lots of elements from occultism and ancient mythology)
Black Sabbath (that was a no-brainer, especially the first two albums)
Yeah, maybe I'm not that old-school when it comes to music, but these are the bands that usually put me into sword & sorcery mood.

Re: Music of DCC
My music tastes aren't really that old school but I've found a few bands that put me in the right mindset for DCC.
I've been listening to a lot of Nightwish, Dragonforce, Lordi, and Dream Theater in preperation for my upcoming DCC game.

Ravenheart87 mentioned The Sword in an earlier post, but yeah I have to third that recommendation. I've loved The Sword from the moment I first heard them on one of the Guitar Hero games. The Maiden, the Mother, and the Crone is my favorite.DimitriX wrote:If you guys like Old School heavy metal, then try out one of Austin, TX's local bands, The Sword:

When writing RPG I usually stick to one of the following "go to mood music":
Black Sabbath - rotating through the first 6 albums, but Sabotage is my favorite for writing
Hellraiser Soundtrack (Christopher Young)
Tron Legacy Soundtrack (Daft Punk)
She Wants Revenge-any of their albums... I'm a fan of this new Darkwave sound
Any Carter Burwell Soundtrack, but Being John Malkovich and Gods and Monsters are my favorites

Re: Music of DCC
Note Joe's strange metal phobia. The closest he comes to Zeppelin is Rush. I'm all for Moody Blues though for some reason.
In the past I've intentionally played Cradle of Filth and Slayer to throw off Mr. Goodman's board games mind. It is often my job to represent Chaos and/or Neutrality when Joe stays too positive.
It probably doesn't need to be repeated, but I listened to The Sword a lot while working on DCC art and still do.
In that more contemporary vein you might also also listen to:
Witchcraft
High on Fire
Sleep
Electric Wizard
From the Hawkwind/ Sabbath standpoint you can also turn to Budgie and ,of coarse, Jethro Tull. I suppose Joe can listen to the 80's Tull.
Also Dio's first band : Rainbow
Some of the divergences on the cds I gave Joe probably included
Bach (on organ)
Dead Can Dance
Rudimentary Peni (they have a whole H.P. Lovecraft Album is you are sophisticated enough for 80's british punk)
Hank Williams III (the grandson, yes country, but the good kind with lots of great dark stuff)
The Pogues
and I'm sure "The Thing That Should Not Be" was on there from the band nobody should follow anymore.
let me see if I can hunt up the list for Joe. I might not have even discovered The Sword at that point.

How about a bit of old brit pomp rock band Magnum?
Or even a spot of Iron Maiden... I used to love roleplaying along to the Killers album.
As a side thing, i like using the theme tune to 'Blood On Satan's Claw' .. An old horror film.
The music is great for a creepy dungeon game. I don't normally play with music on but for a scary game it can sometimes be fun.
Here's the Satan's claw theme:
