Marvin, fearing the imminent death of his small friend, sidles up to Xim. "You're right, we absolutely need to get to the altar... look, a muskrat!" He points into the corner, and then takes advantage of Xim's confusion to jump on him. "GET HIM!" he yells, as he tries to subdue the deluded adventurer.

OOC: Just going for it. Marvin's strength check to subdue Xim: 10
Xim's strength check to resist: 8

Xim's strength check to resist: 8
OOC: Are you trying to grapple him or subdue him (knock him out)?

Grappling: Each party makes opposed attack rolls, adding the higher of their Agility or Strength modifier. (Monsters add their hit dice instead.) An attacker twice the opponent’s size adds +4 to the opposed roll; an attacker triple the opponent’s size adds +8 to the opposed roll; an attacker quadruple the opponent’s size adds +16 to the opposed roll; and so on. If the attacker wins the opposed roll, he has grappled and pinned his opponent. If the attacker loses the opposed roll, the grapple fails.

Subdual damage: You can use the flat of your sword to subdue an opponent you wish to capture alive. If a character is proficient in one of the following weapons, he can inflict subdual damage with it: swords, axes, clubs, spears, and staves. There is no attack penalty, but subdual damage is one die lower than normal for the weapon, according to the dice chain. An opponent brought to 0 hit points via subdual damage collapses unconscious.

Unarmed combat: Unarmed characters inflict subdual damage of 1d3 + Strength modifier.

Jester Jenkins and Joseph begin wailing on the halfling in an attempt to knock him out.
"Go to sleep, dear prince! Dream of small, furry footed women!" shouts the fool, swinging his sword wildly.
"Shut up and hit him, you idiot!" the herder yells, missing with his staff.

[JJ to hit 6, damage 3; J to hit: 2, damage 2---Wow. Just . . . wow.]

OOC: Red Robert punches the halfling. To hit 14, damage 3.

OOC: Unless I'm wrong, Xim started with 4 hp, but lost one falling into a pit, so...

Red Roberts' fist catches Xim squarely on the chin. His eyes roll back in his head and he falls, knocked out cold. The Spear of Ramat clatters to the stone floor.

Red Robert: "Alright, that seems to have done the trick. Now let's get him wrapped up. We'll let him out when we wake."

Marvin looks askance at the spear. "Well, what do we do about that thing? It obviously made poor Xim nutty as a catbird."

"Let me!" The jester takes off his cloak and wraps the spear up, carefully avoiding touching it directly.

(Ooc: hey judge, what's your response to Joseph's to use his herding skills and familiarity with dogs to lure the missing pooch from its honey hole?)

OOC: Uh oh. I hope handling the spear with a cloak is adequate. I would have just left it there.

OOC: I missed that, sorry. Well played.

Joseph, clearly familiar with working with and training dogs, crouches down in front of a hole in the rubble pile and with calm and friendly tones, calls to the whimpering animal. After some time, a very scared, cowering, brown and white mongrel dog inches his way forward and into Joseph's arms.

Meanwhile, Jenkins picks up the Spear of Ramat in his cloak. A series of images flash through his mind... names... events long ago... Akhenmat's betrayal. Bokomat's hiding of the Spear and his subseqent fall to evil beasts...

Give me a Will save (at a +5 for the cloak).

Jenkins feels compelled to return the Spear to the sanctuary and place it into the pedestal...

Jenkins feels intense guilt. Xim was correct. How had he not seen that? Clearly he and his companions were ensorcelled. The spear had defeated the enchantment's power over him!
The jester looks slyly at the others. Clearly these zombies would try to stop him from doing the right thing. But he, Jester Jenkins, has a plan.
He lets out a scream and points in the direction opposite that of the spear's proper home.
"Dear gods! What is that?!!!" As the others turn to look, he runs as fast as he can to place the spear.

Red Robert: "I didn't just beat a tiny man senseless for nothing! After that jester!!!"

Marvin frowns. "Well, we tried. Shall we?" And he sprints after the jester.

Joseph scowls. "This damn jester is going to be the death of me." He sprints after the others.

Jenkins runs into the room, followed a few steps behind by Red Robert, Honest John, Marvin and Joseph.

Once again, as you enter this large room, waves of darkness and evil flood over you. Every light source you carry seems to be dampened and dimmed.

The large, circular pedestal stands with the small, circular hole in its center is in the middle of the room, about 40' from where you enter. Based upon where you started from, it will take at least another round to reach the pedestal.

In between you and it, however, is the 7' black, primordial, amorphous creature with the pseudopod-like tentacles, emanating waves of evil and darkness. It has been waiting for you.

OOC: Joseph, the small dog immediate begins wriggling, barking, whining... it wants out of the room. You're going to have to drop it this round or leave the room.

Roll for initiative...

[-1d is d16, yes? If so, Jenkins=1 (sigh) + 1 for 2, Joseph=17]
Joseph sees the unholy creature rise up before them. He looks down at the whining dog. He looks at the demon again.
"F**k that jester," he mutters and turns and flees the room. He heads towards the dungeon's exit.
