Agreed! Fantgraphics is coming out with some reprints that are organized thematically and by artist, instead of by comic title. They look promising.

the back issues are, of course, very pricey and rare in good condition. heck, even the hardcover EC reprints fetch a hefty price lately.
I'm glad they are reprinting them again.
I think the new format you're mentioning will be really cool because each book will have it's own style. (I love em all!)

I'll have to check out Prophet. It sounds pretty cool. Lately I've been reading some of the old Buck Rogers comics, some of the ideas are pretty neat in it though, but they can be pretty corny, so we'll see......

OK this thread is starting to get expensive. Just got the Orc Stain paperback and the first 3 Savage Sword of Conan compilations. Also pre-ordered the new deluxe Nausicaa hardcovers that are coming out. All great stuff. Thanks for the recommendations everyone.

By the way Mr. Mullen, I'm a huge fan of your stuff in the DCC book. If you ever made a comic I would be first in line to buy it.

The various P. Craig Russell adaptations of Elric stories are good if you can find them. The other Elric comics are pretty hit or miss, IMO.

The Creepy/Eerie archives are much better than EC, in my opinion. Better art, more complex stories (I found ECs stories to be a little too formulaic).

Not to throw a wet blanket on these posts, but are these things really DCC/Appendix N? Or are they broadly just fantasy-themed fiction?

I can't now recall if I ever read any Arion back when it was being published, but for one thing he sure looks a lot handsomer than any DCC Wizard could be expected to look.

arion would be appendix n. it is pulpy mix of science fantasy atlantis and sword and sorcery warriors, wizards, sub-human barbarians and jackal headed hordes. maybe it is not particulary good reading but it is pulpy.

I picked up these full-color, hardcover beauties at my local Half Price Books; the two volumes collect Barry Windsor Smith's entire run on Marvel's Conan The Barbarian plus a few others. Includes adaptations of Tower of the Elephant, Rouges in the House, The Frost Giant's Daughter & Red Nails.

Just read Dynamite's Red Sonja: Blue, which shows wizards as crazy guys that tamper with forces they shouldn't tamper with, adventurers as people that go from rags to riches and back to rags again between jobs, and the general crappy way life ends up for those that would advenure . . . and blue furred demons that show up when wizards need a patron.

It felt pretty Appendix N to me . . .

Has anyone checked out the new Elric comic? It's French but there's an English translation in the works. The artist really seems to get the source material and it looks beautiful from what I can tell in the few online previews. The minions of Chaos are rendered particularly disturbingly.

Lately I've been reading Thorgal comics and for me it has a lot od Appendix N feel. There you can find unusual adventures, fantastic locations, mix of sci-fi and fantasy, struggles between gods, weirdness and mature themes. It has also an interesting storyline, so I highly recommend it.

I don't think anyone mentioned Marvel's Creatures on the Loose yet. It was published REAL early in the 70's and featured different characters for a few issues at a time. Lin Carter's Thongor graced the pages for a number of issues, as did King Kull. Later issues featured Gulliver Jones of Mars. I remember the comic from when I was a kid, but it was before I ever started reading Swords & Planet Fantasy.
