Feather Falling - Laterally

Howdy everyone!

We recently had an encounter with some hill giants, and one of them launched a player like a baseball directly into another character. Our group wizard contended that he should be able to use feather fall to slow the launch and negate the damage taken by the impact. To keep the game rolling and not devolve into mid-combat semantics discussion, our Judge ruled that feather fall's intention is to slow the descent of a fall and would have no effect on the lateral motion of some duders already in flight like a missile.

I'm wondering if any of your here have thoughts on the matter, or better yet - experience in a similar situation. Please let me know.

I think it was an awesome idea and The Rule of Cool states it would succeed.

I'm another vote for "rule of cool : it was a great idea! I MIGHT be persuaded to give a penalty to he spell check, but I'd probably just let it fly (no pun intended).

I would certainly create space for that to have an effect, driven by the circumstances. The spell mentions 'gliding', which is a lateral motion, so it certainly seems reasonable. I'd probably allow anything from a d14 to a normal spellcheck, depending on what the Wizard was doing at the time and other factors.

I am stealing this idea for my own purposes. I personally think it's brilliant.

Thanks to this thread, I now have an encounter called Treebuchet.
One of many ways of traveling over a trackless forest! ;)
