Re: Liber Arcanum

Hey just wanted to let everyone know that testing and editing are going along nicely, and I'm setting up things with the artists. I'll be sending in a 3rd draft copy of the manuscript to Mr. G by the middle to end of next month if everything continues according to plan, then we'll see where things g...

Re: Mercurial Magic - Who uses it?

I have little experience with spellcasters (both game I play/judge are level 1), but I admit to having paid no attention to manifestation yet. I've also designed a few spells for patrons in the game I judge, and didn't bother doing manifestation tables at all. It takes long enough to design a patro...

Re: Liber Arcanum

Update: About a week ago I sat down to review my outline and all of the accumulated files and discovered, much to my chagrin, that I had more than 225 pages of material. Ordinarily I'd be thrilled by this kind of progress, but after writing the CCD I decided I really don't want to deal with anything...

Re: Mercurial Magic - Who uses it?

I played in a pbp awhile back where my wizard rolled the 'repair' spell as one of his starting spells. The mercurial magic roll was the plague of rats result... Therefore, the wizard found small twigs, broke them in two, and if he ever found himself in an unexpected situation where he needed a bit ...

Re: Mercurial Magic - Who uses it?

@ GB> No worries! Remember, "Thou shalt fear no rule!" The way I see it, that means we're both right, because we're doing what works for us, because it's FUN. The same goes for Mercurial Magic... if someone finds it to be cumbersome don't use it. As long as things are consistent ...

Re: Swimming

@ Skyscraper> Thanx. :D I actually prefer it when players tell me things like; "I pat down the guys pocket from the outside." or "I ransack the bedroom starting by turning over the mattress." Or "I start my search by tapping on the walls looking for any hollow spots." M...

Re: Mercurial Magic - Who uses it?

@GB> That's a great solution, and if it works go for it! Unfortunately the second paragraph of the mercurial magic entry (cr110) says: As a result, the effect of a magical spell varies according to who casts it. A magical rite invoked by one mage may be more powerful – or even different – ...

Thanx GB! I think you'll really like it. I was bouncing around the boards the other day and found this thread: http://www.goodman-games.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=60&t=44370 And it reminded me that I forgot to mention one of the CCD's lesser, but still fantastic selling points! We all know what ...

Re: Swimming

@ Skyscraper> Love your post. I agree entirely. Knowing when and where to use a skill check is mostly an art learned through trial and error for most GM's (myself included). I blame 3.x, there were skill checks in the other versions of D&D, but they never seemed to be such a big deal until the d...

Re: Mercurial Magic - Who uses it?

Dcc magic might not be random, but Mercurial magic is. It just doesnt fit with my vision. I dont imagine a great wizard like Gandalf casting spells and thousands of mice coming from his robes. Just me. If its fun, and you like it, use it! You're right, if the players at my table didn't want to both...

Re: Mercurial Magic - Who uses it?

I suppose you're right, and perspective really does matter. The thing is, I don't really see the DCC magic system as all that random. Imagine for a moment that each wizard's mind is simply a lens. As the caster learns spells this is equivalent to introducing specific flaws and fractures into...

Re: Swimming

****Shameless plug**** Here's what I proposed in Critters, Creatures, & Denizens: Most creatures have the ability to swim if the need arises. At such times they can make a swim check versus DC= 6 + the physical check penalty for any armor and +1 for every 25lbs of carried equipment. If...

Re: Mercurial Magic - Who uses it?

I absolutely love mercurial magic and the twists and conundrums it presents for the players. Like corruption, Patron Taint, and mutations; the players are prevented from approaching their characters as a stat-block and forces them to play the character as a person trying to deal with these often hei...

Re: Liber Arcanum

Well, I've spent the last few days taking a break from writing the last couple of general spells to work on some of my Patron ideas. Things are moving along nicely and I've finished editing my re-write of Aristemis the Wise as a Patron so I set it in the final format and here she is; complete with 3...

Re: The adventures seem cool, but how's the campaign?

Sorry to see the group dynamics play out how they did. Gamers. Holy crap, thanks for answering! Again, it was not a 'calling you out', but an honest desire to know how/why a mechanic, an integral one at that, fails, by perception or fact. I am getting ready to kick off a campaign, so I am posting a...

Re: Wizard Spell Casting Roll

In the few games that I've run so far, the wizard's spells and corruptions as well as the clerics have been so attractive that wizards and clerics are preferred over the other classes/races. Thankfully my wife likes to play thieves; but I keep having to NPC the fighters!

I am not trying to put you in a spot light, but after reading your blog post from December, you were down on the Luck mechanic and a few other things. Has your view been discussed here at all? I am curious as to what others think in your observations; too many 1-2 level 'campaigns', not enough actu...

Re: The adventures seem cool, but how's the campaign?

So far my experience has been that campaign play is possible, it just requires a shift of focus for the GM/Judge/Storyteller away from the search for inventive ways to slaughter; and to opt-out of the 'Ire of the Gods' rule. The hardest part is to never forget that the core rules support a fast and ...

I won't fuss with you for not gaming with clerics. But I would rather someone not tell me the right way to game either. Play what and how you want. :) +d100 I've played in games that didn't have clerics and never really noticed their absence except in the games where there was NO healing magic. The...

Well... Here's a good place to start... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_lunar_deities From my research the Moon Gods; are mostly found in the last 2000 years, prior to that The moon was considered Feminine by most cultures via the connection with women's monthly cycles.
