Re: Alt magic idea
Neat, but two (possibly unintended) consequences: 1) Players will know that d12's and d16's will most likely fail to produce a spell and be discarded, and therefore players will frontload all of their casting attempts with the highest dice first. Once those are burned out, the wizard rapidly (expone...

Re: DCC 66.5 Preorder
Lol, has the staff been informed of this yet?
I remember back last year when everyone was saying "don't release in the winter, wait to the spring to make it pretty". I'm still in that camp and will wait patiently!

Re: Stop the press!
Haha, I always love it when people use that phrase. I am a printer and you learn very quickly in this industry that you really cannot "stop the presses!" Even before ink hits paper, there is so much work and expense in producing a job (from design, to prepress work, to creating proofs and ...

Re: Luck Kind of Sucks
If your players are in a downward death spiral with luck, then something has gone horribly wrong. The first thing I see wrong with that scenario is that 0-level characters should not be fighting an Ogre. That's actually a common misconception. Bigger monsters have higher XP rewards, lower level char...

Re: Stat Increases As Levels Increase
HackMaster 4e had a good method of stat increase (with fractions of stats increasing and a randomly rolled rate relative to the character's class). Normally I would say go with something like that, HOWEVER, I really like DCC because it keeps everything simple. No stat increase, I say!

Can we can Harley and Joe to sign our pre-orders? The black vinyl cover is so metal, it deserves some message like "keep on rocking" scribbled inside.

History of the OSR
I was just thinking about how the OSR has developed. If you look at the timeline, it really began with an attempt to emulate generic, vanilla fantasy D&D: HackMaster (2001) Castles & Crusades (2004) OSRIC (2006) Basic Fantasy RPG (2006) Labyrinth Lord (2007) Swords & Wizardry (2008) Afte...

DCC's Implied Setting
Cross-posted from RPG.net: At first glance, the implied setting of the Dungeon Crawl Classics RPG is one of ancient tombs, bizarre enemies, irresistable treasure and dangerous magic. DCC is a game of chances, where something is constantly happening. Characters can be stymied by fumbles or transforme...

Re: Level Limits
Maybe, but as a referee, you can still make the players work for it. I wouldn't just hand the thief a chance to kill the dragon. It is probably as a result of this thinking (that momentous events should be rare or impossible), that few players have gotten to level 9, killed a dragon, or "won&qu...

Re: Level Limits
Thieves can't expend luck to improve damage dice. They can only expend luck to improve their "chance" of success, aka d20 or d% rolls. For each point of Luck expended, he rolls one die, and applies that modifier to his roll. This bonus can be applied to thief skills where each +1 = +5%. F...

Re: Level Limits
I don't really follow how the reviewer came to these conclusions. To review his principle points: " thieves spend most of the game feeling like they should've been a fighter " The Thief can one-shot any enemy. A level 4 Thief recovers 4 luck each day, and can burn 10 luck to do +10d6 damag...

Joe, what was your soundtrack when coming up with this game? What are you DM's listening to when writing up your campaigns? I'm thinking anything from the late 1970's is fair game. I'll start - To me, DCC is:

Re: Identifying Magic Items Properties
I agree with that sentiment (letting players know what they have, for a price). I think if I made the players pay to learn an item's history, I would also make them invest to earn the item's benefits - maybe continual XP investments would unlock more backstory and greater power. I like the idea that...

How about Tony Millionaire?

He is definitely the right style, and he is actually pretty diverse in his subject matter. Plus, he does zany-bizarre-disgusting very well.

Alternate EXP Award Method
One misconception from my early D&D days was that I believed a monster's EXP total was the amount that all players in the party would receive if they beat the monster (I did not understand that it was divided between players). I also didn't realize that adding monsters would increase the EXP rew...

Re: Luck Kind of Sucks
Luck is not a crutch for players to lean on, the rules are fine as-is. Man, if you give players an inch, they'll take a mile! If my players complain that the pay-off for spending Luck isn't lucrative enough, I'll just remove the rule entirely for them.
