Re: Dragonmech and 5th Edition D&D
I don't really see a problem with having a DC to keep track of. I mean, dragonborn get a distinct DC for their dragon breath. It's not unheard of, and I don't think it's that hard to keep track of. Furthermore, fighters that pick the battle master path can get some options that have DCs. So I person...

Re: Dragonmech and 5th Edition D&D
Looks pretty good, except I'm a little iffy on Tearing. First, I think reactions can only be used when it's not your turn, which means it doesn't work right. Second, it seems a little funny to be using a reaction to deal it. Maybe limit it to 1/rd, like Sneak Attack? Also, here's something to consid...

necromantic mech inspiration
So I just came across this artwork, and it seems great for a necromantic mech. Figured I'd share for everyone. http://www.deviantart.com/art/Howl-of-the-Wendigo-65798384 Strangely, the drawing is supposed to be of a wendigo, but it seems to have taken a lot of artistic liberty. Still, if I get aroun...

Re: Dragonmech and 5th Edition D&D
Yeah, that sounds right. I'd call one the Gearwright rather than Traditionalist. After all, the Gearwrights Guild are the source of traditions, aren't they? Plus, it got me thinking about neat rp opportunities. What if someone takes the Gearwright archetype but doesn't belong to the Guild? Guilds ar...

Re: Dragonmech and 5th Edition D&D
That is something I did not consider. That is an excellent idea to give existing classes new archetypes for the setting. Though what would the two to three Coglayer archetypes be? Basic coglayer would be gadgets there is the mech jockey but I want to shy away from things like that and assimilated w...

Re: Dragonmech and 5th Edition D&D
Thanks. Your ideas are pretty cool too, Draconis13. I see your point about the steam weapon adept, but I wonder if it would be better suited as a fighter subclass. Sort of the steam equivalent of the eldritch knight? I'll need to go back to my notes - I had a rough draft of a mech jockey class almos...

Re: Dragonmech and 5th Edition D&D
Thinking a little bit more about the 5e mech jockey class. I'd said earlier I was considering Hereal ranger/mage jockey as one path, and Irontooth as another. Well, what about the DragonMechs as a third? It feels like it conflicts a bit with 3.5, as the DragonMech PRC required some Irontooth trainin...

Re: Dragonmech and 5th Edition D&D
I haven't played Dragonmech so I don't have much to contribute of value here, but I just wanted to say that reading over this thread has gotten me interested in the game and I'll have to search a little more to find out about it. I play and run a lot of 5E, so the crossover in systems is what attra...

Re: Dragonmech and 5th Edition D&D
And I'm beginning to give some thought to the mech jockey class and mech rules in general. The first thing that stands out to me is that hardness is no longer a thing, and DR is handled simply as resistance to damage types. So unless we add that back solely for mech combat, we need to rethink that a...

Plot Hook: Lunar Incarnation spell
So this idea just came to me. Something to drive a couple sessions. A wizard recently introduced a new spell he's dubbed Lunar Incarnation for the battle against lunar monsters. It's in particular important for enchanters, due to lunar creatures' +10 to saves against mind-affecting effects. The Luna...

Re: Dragonmech and 5th Edition D&D
I'm glad to see some conversions are in the works. Lately I've myself been thinking about the clockwork ranger and the coglayer. Seems we've come to some similar ideas for the coglayer. My own thoughts I was working on: - Steam powers have a complexity rating, similar to spell levels. And therefore,...

New Mech Ideas: Gibbering Giant and Manticore
Hey everyone. I recently had a couple ideas for new mechs, and one in particular seems like it could create a good campaign arc. So I'll start with that one: Gibbering Giant Developed by a necromancer in service to Jyl Tandaavi and Sharlorn the Necropolis, the gibbering giant prominently features th...

Re: Lots of Problems I noticed
2) What the hell is wrong with non-magical force fields? It works in sci-fi all the time. And what is steampunk? Retro sci-fi. Hello? Mechs? Or The Time Machine? If it doesn't have technology we don't/can't have, it's not sci-fi. It's not steampunk. It seems like something from Gundam or NGE, not a...

Re: steam power ideas
I just put together a new combo: force generator + lobber + fin + apparatus = bulldozer cannon. Send a wall of force flying straight at your foe, or by using the trigger to turn on the fin, send it slamming right down on top of them. I handle it as a the enemy needing to make a reflex save to avoid ...

Re: Lots of Problems I noticed
1) In DragonMech, steam power and magic are compatible to some extent. The steam mage can augment wands with steam powers. Some steam powers (darkness generator, cold generator) require spell input during creation, but are themselves non-magical. Think of it as "attuning" the item. I mean,...

Re: Lots of Problems I noticed
Welcome to steampunk. Really, that's the whole basis of the genre: futurstic stuff in an anachronistic setting. I'll return with my own question: who says you have to invent solar panels before you invent force fields? Think about everything we have today: did it all have to be invented in that orde...

Re: Lots of Problems I noticed
In answer to the oil question: I forget which book covered it, but that one has been explained: oil comes from deep underground - the Underdeep, in DragonMech. There exist lots of creatures that consume oil to live. In biological terms, chemosynthesis rather than photosynthesis is the keystone of th...

Re: For Your Inspriation
The idea sounded cooler than the images seem to suggest. I don't think the steamborg attachments were pronounced enough. Still kinda wish I had a chance to see it. Hmm.... You may be right. But I keep it excusing it because I understand how limited their budget was. It probably would seem a little ...

Not as visually "borg-y" as I'd hoped, but still looks cool. And definitely an interesting interpretation! True, but they couldn't sink the entire budge into costumes. And keep in mind, Othello isn't a borg, and he's in that picture. I know the review did complain that the essential other...

Ok, I don't have pictures, but there should be some in the paper within the next week. Actually, the photographer was sitting just a seat or two over from me. It was quite an interesting experience. Basically, this is what it would look like if the Borg went to a Ren fair. The program declared they ...

Incarnum of DragonMech
(Yes, this is from the Psionics in DragonMech guy). I was browsing through my old Magic of Incarnum book lately (so sad that I never got a chance to use it), and I realized it really could have a place in DragonMech. Think about it. With the gods under siege, souls have been getting waylaid en route...
