Re: Burn luck to win initiative? Tell player how much to burn?
I don't let them know the target number. Eventually they figure it out, or spend enough to be "safe," which suits me fine.

Re: Running battles with a ton of creatures
Thanks for the tips! In this case, it was actually an MCC module, called "Hive of the Overmind". You start the game with everyone in a big cavern surrounded by antmen, and pretty much immediately get thrown into a battle. There were options for more stealthy maneuvers as well, but fighting...

Re: Random encounters?
Ah, I kind of guessed that that was the intent, but wasn't sure because it wasn't spelled out anywhere. I've been using the D&D 5e way of doing it, which is rolling a d20 every "turn" and triggering a random encounter on a 19-20, possibly some lower number if the danger is higher. But ...

Re: Running battles with a ton of creatures
Hmm, I see. What about in level 0 adventures? There's no mighty deeds or spells to be cast there. In that case, the sheer number of PCs is a factor too. Last night I ran a game with 4 players, and each had 4 PCs. Every turn involved each player going around and deciding what each character in the co...

Running battles with a ton of creatures
There are many DCC modules where a huge amount of combatants are described. For instance, in the character funnel presented in the DCC book. There is a room with like 100 enemy soldiers. Putting that specific example aside, how are you supposed to run combats with such a huge number of creatures? Su...

Random encounters?
I noticed some of the adventures call for rolling for random encounters -- but I don't remember ever seeing rules on how you do that. Do you roll a d20? What number does a random encounter trigger off of?
Are there general rules for this or is it supposed to just be figured out ad hoc by the GM?

Re: some things I think I maybe have learned (I think)
I don't think Clerics being mobbed like that makes sense. It happens in real life because none of that ever happens and it's a miracle because it's so rare. But in DCC and D&D and other fantasy, magic and the supernatural are as common as a house cat. Why would anyone be so blown away? It wouldn...

Using DCC modules for other games?
I was thinking, would DCC modules work for other systems? Like suppose I was going to use some of the adventures for D&D 5th edition. All of the DCC modules are evocative and unforgettable. They could be memorable even without the DCC system. But would it work? Or is it the lethality of the DCC ...

Re: Adding new characters to the party after level 0
If I mix and match level 1s and 0s, is there a good measure for how many level 0s = a level 1 PC?
Like if I do a level 1 adventure, how do I know I'm not making it too easy or too hard when everyone isn't the right level.

Adding new characters to the party after level 0
How do you handle adding new PCs to the party? For example, in my own game, I had 3 friends, and 1 of them lost all of their PCs in the funnel. There's a 4th friend who wasn't there with us. So 2 of my friends have level 1 characters, and the other 2 friends don't. Are you supposed to just make new ...

Re: How to calculate saves?
Oops, meant to say level 0, yeah.
re, birth augurs changing: do you mean after burning luck? I thought your birth augur was just fixed along with the luck score itself from the beginning no matter what you do.

Racial features at 0 level
This is one thing that confuses me about DCC character creation. The races are a class, and they have certain racial features like Halflings and their darkvision. But if level 0 PCs don't have classes, does that mean a level 0 Halfling doesn't have those racial features until they become level 1? Or...

So at level 0 it's just Stamina then. Got it.

How to calculate saves?
The explanations for the stats say that they INFLUENCE the saving throws, but I'm not sure if that means that they're the only thing that goes into them.
For instance, a Fortitude saving throw. Is it just your stamina bonus? Or something else?
