Re: Were Elven Clerics a big historical mistake?

To defend RA Salvatore just a bit, while I haven't been a huge fan of any recent offerings, Drizzt kind of exists has he is today because TSR and WOTC after them mandated that he keep writing the character. If you go back and read The Crystal Shard or even the other drow characters in the Dark Elf t...

Re: Is our vision of Conan wrong?

The more I read the actual stories, the more I pictured Conan with furs, chainmail shirts, or breastplates on, instead of being bare chested. The only thing that would kind of interfere with my image of Conan is facial hair. I know it doesn't make much sense for a barbarian/mercenary/bandit/pirate ...

Re: Do we need War rules?

My two favorite mass combat systems are from Savage Worlds Deluxe and (oddly) from Heroes of Battle. Heroes of Battle is probably the most appropriate for this kind of thing. Essentially, your side has a certain number of victory points to achieve for your side to win. So if the PCs fight through en...

Re: Appendix N Comic Books

Just read Dynamite's Red Sonja: Blue , which shows wizards as crazy guys that tamper with forces they shouldn't tamper with, adventurers as people that go from rags to riches and back to rags again between jobs, and the general crappy way life ends up for those that would advenure . . . and blue fur...

Re: Five Years Later...

I've kind of liked this approach ever since I read the Fafhrd and Grey Mouser books, and got that feeling that the books jumped head months if not years between their adventures, and it wasn't uncommon to mention how bored they had gotten in between when they were risking their lives. You sort of ge...

Re: How do you define min/max?

Then they mumble something about Stormwind Fallacy and say that they can always roleplaying their character however they want, no matter how they arrange the stats ...that is not what that fallacy covers. The fallacy pointed out by stormwind is that one cannot optimize/min-max/otherwise build a cha...

Re: Disappointed with the FLGS in regards to DCC RPG.

I'd cut the FLGS guys a little bit of slack when it comes to what they stock. In this day and age, unless you have an absolutely amazing local gaming scene that is also amazingly diverse, it really doesn't do your FLGS much good to stock everything that might seem cool. Cut them some slack and let t...

Re: Tolkein's Elves and pointed ears

I think elements of Tolkien fit, but the overall tone of most of the books aren't as similar to other Appendix N stories. In fact, the more I think about it, I think the Hobbit fits into Appendix N a lot more than the LOTR trilogy does. Bilbo is a hapless 0-level character that gets caught up in an ...

Re: How do you define min/max?

This reminds me unfortunately of the Pathfinder game I'm currently playing in. I know a lot of min/max players that essentially build to do their one thing as well as possible, and let the stats fall where they may. Then they mumble something about Stormwind Fallacy and say that they can always role...

Re: Curious about the DCC RPG crowd...

I tried getting her into the hobby later. I ran a solo adventure for her, and kept throwing things in her favor to help her, but in the end, a lowly skeleton killed her character and she hung up her dice. To this day, even though she never became a gamer, she'll tell that story whenever RPGs get bro...

Re: Curious about the DCC RPG crowd...

I started with the Erol Otus Red Box, but that was after my sister got it for Christmas and abandoned it when she found out the price of being "edgy" was actually reading the rulebooks . . .
