Re: Dryads and Monster Magic
Nice. Those seem like good options, and good advice on thinking ahead about dueling potential.

Dryads and Monster Magic
I'm working on an adventure focused on obtaining the "wood from a dryad's tree" from the Free RPG day adventure, which involves designing a dryad for my campaign. As I'm starting to think through this, it's leading me to a broader question: how should magic and magic-like effects work for ...

Re: Free RPG Day: Pod-Caverns Under DCC RPG Rules
Remember that the guy with the best stats isn’t always the one to survive the funnel. I don't remember the exact numbers, but so far in my games the guys with the best stats have usually been the first to die in the funnel, because they get put in the front but aren't actually that much stronger th...

Re: 3d6, in order
Comments from the playtest last night (I'll be posting in Actual Play this evening) were generally, tacitly and tamely okay with the stats. 3d6 in order was a-okay by them. Which is surprising because most of the players started out from 3e onward. Only one was an active roleplayer in the heyday of...

Re: Why no "WIS" Wisdom stat
ok, but how do I explain to my players that, since no skills like Notice exist, Luck is used for sensory perception checks like Listen? Listening is a good question. Not being sure the best way to go, and not being fully comfortable with luck as listen, I defaulted to D6 for listening at the door. ...

Re: Unexpected developments in player psychology
Ironic if it's harder to convert treasure from one game to another than it is to convert monsters. :P Although with the rarity of magic items in DCC, that seems like it might be the case. Do you just cut all the magical treasure from a module? Some of it? Probably most of it, and make the remaining...

Bonding a hireling to Azi Dahaka
One of my players sent me this, and I got permission to pass it along. The character began as a Chaotic Jeweler (he rolled for alignment). Even though INT wasn't his best stat, it also wasn't his worse, and he wanted to try out being a wizard. He rolled Patron Bond and decided to go with Azi Dahaka....

Megadungeons and Appendix N
I'm far from competent in appendix N: are there many examples of "megadungeons?" Moria could count, but is perhaps better thought of as a sort of underground wilderness (?) That's an honest question, as I can't think of any examples from the stuff I've read. I've been playtesting with Ston...

Re: Unexpected developments in player psychology
I'm more puzzled about the Ogre with 1000 gp. A gp is like a year's worth of income for a """well-to-do""" farmer. How does a solo ogre accumulate that kind of wealth without attracting the attention of higher level adventurers? Don't shoot the messenger on this one. A...

Re: Birth Augur and Lucky Roll
interesting idea. like maybe everyone gets to add d4 to their luck. and some advetures might have bonuses. If a good player despoils an evil temple, he get's a big bonus, while a chaotic character does not, rather the other way around. Yeah, something like that, but with the possibility that it cou...

Re: Suggested Published Adventures That Would Make for Good
This past weekend we started “Modnar’s Cellar” from Stonehell Dungeon Supplement Two: Buried Secrets (link below). I'm using it for our funnel and it's working out great so far. http://www.lulu.com/product/media-download/stonehell-dungeon-supplement-two-buried-secrets-%28pdf%29/13648216 Stonehell i...

Re: Unexpected developments in player psychology
She returned to town with a little bit of treasure, and rolled up three more zeroes. Not trying to criticize, but I'm genuinely puzzled--why is she rolling more characters when this is supposed to be a funnel that whittles down the number of characters? That's a good question, and maybe it would be...

Re: Birth Augur and Lucky Roll
For this reason, I'm going to award luck points when I award experience (based on some formula I haven't figured out yet) and disregard the starting roll. Something just struck me: I'm not sure I like having luck based at all on what a character does, or at least not primarily. What if at the end o...

Re: 3d6, in order
I'm looking forward to trying the funnel in practice but looking at some of the sample sets generated by this excellent resource , my heart sunk. I can't conceive of enjoying them even if they made it to level 1. Then I realised that in practice I suppose I could enjoy the red-shirtness of these ne...

Re: Dice...
I was talking to my wife about the dice ire yesterday, and we came to the conclusion that it's kind of funny. Put a d6, a d8, and a d14 in front of the average person, and the d6 is the only one that is "normal." We already use weird dice, we are just used to it.

Re: Birth Augur and Lucky Roll
I'd really like to see some examples of the kind of actions that people have given out luck for, as I've had a hard time figuring out when that would be. Is it just acting out your alignment really well?

Unexpected developments in player psychology
Not sure how widely applicable this will be, but I had an interesting experience last night. I was getting set to play with two players, my wife and a friend of mine. Both of them have finished the funnel through solo play. The friend hit level one via the "one adventure" rule, while my wi...

Re: 3d6, in order
My experience has been like what Joseph has described: people that wouldn't otherwise touch random generation of stats AT ALL with a 10' pole are willing to do 3D6 in order for a set of level zeroes. The funnel changes the experience in a lot of ways, not all of which I would have anticipated.

I think that after running it for a while I'd figure out what the chance of being a demi-human was, roll that, and then allow people to come up with an occupation, weapon, and trade good (subject to DM approval).

Re: What happens when a (n)th level character dies?
Another option is to keep any other surviving level zeroes from your original funnel around, either just keeping the sheets on hand or using them as minor NPCs, and then taking up one of those. Depending on your mortality rate, that might not work though.

Re: Playtest Report: Character Funnel Play Styles
those same players aren't thrilled with random magic effects and some of the other elements which make DCC unique. So funny that you say that. The cautious playing and a little bit of luck paid off last night when my wife took down an ogre on the way to Stonehell yesterday and took 7 level zeroes t...

Luck Check = Confusing term usage
In looking over the class descriptions, it seems that the phrase "luck check" is used in what I would consider an unintuitive way: A thief gains additional bonuses when making a Luck check, as follows. First, the thief rolls a luck die when he expends Luck A halfling gains additional bonuse...

Cleric Spells Known?
I just want to make sure I'm reading this right, as what I'm reading seems to be different from standard cleric magic. A cleric has access to the spells of his god as noted on table 1-5. Table 1-5 gives a cleric 4 spells "known" at first level. That leads me to believe that a cleric does n...

Playtest Report: Character Funnel Play Styles
This may be too obvious to state, but I noticed something new on my third run-through of a level 0 funnel last night. I had my wife roll up 8 level zeroes and sent her to Stonehell. The above ground areas of Stonehell seem to make a great level zero adventure, btw. What I noticed was that she approa...
