Re: Another Barbarian (Please Review)
If you want to have it in your campaign, do it. My opinion is that a barbarian or berserker is not that different from a warrior that it deserves a seperate class. Creating a "berserker rage" mighty deed would be more than enough. That's a great idea! I really like that. Whatever the bers...

Re: Another Barbarian (Please Review)
I agree with this... though the Barbarian kit for Fighters from 2nd edition is, to date, my favorite implementation. It was a Fighter, and for a higher requirement for Charisma it gained a special mechanic that pushed social reactions toward the extremes (good reactions were pushed towards friendly...

Re: Another Barbarian (Please Review)
Yet my first response in this case is Why? The warrior is special, and in all the threads where other warrior-esque classes took the mighty deed and used it for whatever purpose, that usurpation of the warrior's unique ability has been somewhat frowned upon. The warrior is fine for all of the pure ...

Re: Another Barbarian (Please Review)
Final thought: Are you sure you even need a new class called "barbarian" and not just a warrior who is a barbarian by flavor? You seem to want a big, tough, hard hitting type - that's exactly what warriors already are. That's a fair enough point. Call it a thought exercise in what a varia...

Re: Another Barbarian (Please Review)
To the Death allows 3+ additional rounds of fighting on regardless of HP total - how does healing the barbarian during that time interact with this? Why a different amount of time spent fighting than other classes get "bleeding to death"? With no ceiling to the ability to shrug off damage...

Re: House Rule Feedback Wanted
Looking over it I like this more. I really like the cumulative bonus if the spell fails to get quickie cast, and I like the use of the dice chain for fumbles. I am quite satisfied with this.

Re: House Rule Feedback Wanted
What do you think about the possible modification, in red, in my previous post? I like it. I don't think it's worth the risk considering how terrible Herman's stats are currently. Strength is about the only skill he has that's even a wash, much less a positive bonus. If I had a better bonus I'd def...

Re: House Rule Feedback Wanted
The book is explicit about how spells are gained, and your house rule is at least a compromise with that. The problem is that the Wizard class pages and the rules for gaining spells are at opposite ends of the book. It'll work out, assuming the wizard can get back to town safely. Having the ability ...

Re: Classic Modules
Now, I'm a fan of challenging funnel adventures... but an "Against the Giants: designed for 260 0-level players" intro message might put folks off a bit. ;) I am ten different kinds of down for this. Lemme get that character generator cranking..... Defeating the enemy with a collapsing mo...

Re: Question about "Withdrawl," page 95
Imagine, if you would, that a party of 25 0-lvl characters is facing a group of 5 giant rats in a big chaotic scrum. Suddenly, the 25 0-lvl characters decide to withdraw. Does each rat gain 25 attacks? Or does each rat get to attack one character, once? I think you know what my ruling would be. RC ...

Re: Question about "Withdrawl," page 95
I think "Withdraw" in this instance is any movement in combat, period. It lists retreat as a act distinct from moving to a new position in combat. I'm interpreting it as similar to an attack of opportunity. Enemies move past the character more than one square, and they are technically read...

Question about "Withdrawl," page 95
"Once a character is engaged in melee, he cannot back away without opening himself up to attack. If a character or monster withdraws from an active melee – whether to retreat, move to a new position, or attempt some action – his opponents immediately receive a single free attack." Situatio...

Black Powder Firearms: General Characteristics: -Firearms can be used as clubs at no penalty. -Reloading takes one full round. -On a critical hit, target saves vs. death (DC 15), save for normal damage. -In tight quarters, after firing, smoke fills a ten-foot area centered on the firer, providing co...

Black powder firearms
I've been kicking around ideas for incorporating muskets and blunderbusses into the rules. In general, I feel like there are penalties associated with these basic weapons, offset by their power. For example, I'm thinking of a blanket -2 penalty to the use of a firearm in it's intended role. Muskets ...

I take it back. The Extradimensional Analogue is exactly what I was thinking of using in a campaign. So good.

Re: Alternate physical levels
It's not a "class." It's an attribute bump instead of a level increase. If you imagine that a level is constant training and practice to achieve a new tier of mastery, this would be like lifting weights or reading to do the same to an attribute instead of class powers, personal instead of ...

Re: Alternate physical levels
So is it considered off-topic when no one even mentions what the original poster had to say?
I think an alternate level is pretty elegant, can be taken in lieu of a regular level for those who choose to do so, and when they need to do so, and otherwise does little to impede progress.

Alternate physical levels
Here's an idea for handling stat increases: Instead of building the stat increase into the character level itself, why not have levels that are only a stat increase? Hear me out: So any level after first level, instead of getting the next level's hp and spells and whatnot, the character gets to incr...

Re: Second Playtest (with actual people!) Part 3
The survivors gathered up the loot and headed back to town, and once there leveled up. Two halflings, two dwarves, a warrior, a cleric, and a thief joined the wizard as real adventurers. Bill, who'd lost all of his characters to the ogre, had four new zeros ready to go, but had to leave. The group f...

Re: Second Playtest (with actual people!) Part 2
The death rate was high. Bill and Chris lost characters right away fighting the orc, and as their first exposure to the system that's probably appropriate. Following that combat, despite the comedy, there was a lot more caution at play. Favorite characters stayed a little further back, and the less ...

Second Playtest (with actual people!) Part 1, 2, & 3
Our playtest consisted of Dan, Chris, Bill, Me (Jork), and Bob, our DM. Bob’s been running Goodman modules for Dan and I for years, and this game is all the way inside his wheelhouse. The module we played was familiar, a zero-level number that was not the one I posted about previously, so that ought...
