Frost Giant Jarl
Hello all, it's been awhile since I've been active here on the forums, but I thought I'd see if any of you could give me a hand w/ something I'm cooking up. The gist of it is this: A bunch of my Colorado friends (anywhere between 7 - 15) and I get together around the holidays for a day of gaming. Ge...

Re: Would you use the DCC RPG for long term campaign play ?
I'm not in Joseph's home game, but I've been playtesting since March and, so far, it has worked for campaign play as written. For me, at least. (Not using the Beta rules per se, but the Alpha set with levels through 5 worked out.) That's valuable knowledge... It's curious why no one has really spok...

Re: Would you use the DCC RPG for long term campaign play ?
Quick question: I've heard that Joseph has been running a home game with these rules, is there any reason we haven't heard any reports from one of his players on how this game works in a campaign setting? I'm just curious. These are the only people that might be able to answer the questions we all h...

Re: Spells, and what to do with them.... [long]
For PCs I'd say that Harley's suggestion is spot on. Bringing a referential "spell book" to the table seems perfectly reasonable. But for the DM I might say that's an awful lot of chart referencing / page flipping...So, you could potentially shorten that up by doing it ahead of time. I kno...

Re: The beta rules will be available...
As far as actual content goes, the main "space drain" is the spells. The easiest way to PLAY with spells is to have one spell per page, but it's not the most efficient way to lay them out (eats up lots of space). But in every game where we've used the "efficient layouts," the pl...

Re: [Design Question] DCC RPG and 10 Levels
Now, maybe with the way spell casting and MDoA's and the luck mechanics work, maybe a level 10 pc in DCCRPG is more equivlent to a level 14 or 15 pc in older editions of DnD than what I first realized (as others have pointed out, a fighter is likely to get alot of MDoA at "high" levels of...

Ah! This is excellent news!
Early enough to read so that we could possibly run a game on Free RPG Day! As long as the adventures are brief enough to get a grasp on quickly, and we can get them in our greedy paws first thing on the 18th.

Re: [Design Question] DCC RPG and 10 Levels
This is a long thread, and I haven't read 100% of it, so if I'm covering things that have previously been talked about, then I completely apologize for wasting time. I'm not a level nazi, but I certainly like the mechanic. D&D was my first role playing game back in '77 and it had levels then, an...

CU campus? My old alma mater! Heck Harley, tell me when and I'll see if I can make it.
What level are you guys playing? Sounds higher than 5th...Which is interesting in and of itself.
Beta rules cover up to 5th level right?

Re: Free RPG Day
Ordered the dice about a month ago, so I'm set on that front. No, I'm not a dice "nut". I don't have a shopping cart full of the things...But this game is gonna be cool. I'm invested. I suppose the reason I asked about the rules was that I'd love to run a game at the local shop. I had such...

Re: Maps
Cool! Well done. Do you remember the little drawings on the bottom of the last few pages of the DMG? They were this quasi-story line of a band of PCs. Not sure who did them, (DCS?) but I loved them. And always thought that something like that, telling a brief "story", along the bottom of a...

Free RPG Day
A couple quick questions about the Free RPG Day that's coming up soon... 1. Will the wonky dice ship w/ the package? Or is the person running the game expected to have them at hand? 2. I've heard mention of two modules (0 and 5th level) but just recently Joseph said "the module", indicatin...

Re: How could we forget this...???
I too was curious about how the 'Elf' played...and so I grabbed the available character sheet at Genghis Con. My impressions (which were in February...lots of design water under the bridge since then) were such: 1. Infravision: Didn't play much of a role. And quite frankly, I can say that it never r...

Re: Ah, Nostalgia!
I agree...wonderful stuff. We've actually started up a B/X campaign to fill in the gap before the DCC RPG is released. We haven't had to much time to play unfortunately, but those few sessions that we HAVE run have been loads of fun. It's my favorite edition of D&D. (Well...AD&D is a very cl...

Re: Joseph Goodman speaks out on levels
Well this IS enlightening... and invigorating! All in one. I'm frankly quite amazed. And that's a good thing. I suppose in a strange way this type of response is a symptom of the OSR. This hobby of ours has significantly evolved over the last couple of years, and one result is that companies like Go...

Re: Questions about the Beta version
More and more, I am seeing level 6-10 play as distinct from level 1-5 play. Remember the "level scale" here -- unlike 3E and 4E where the game is supposed to go to level 20 or 30, DCC RPG is a throwback to 1974 play where accomplishing 6th level was a huge deal. As such, I'm now inclined ...

Re: Clerics and the DCC
Very interesting take on the cleric, Andy. I was intrigued to hear about the mechanical differences between clerics and mages, and I think you've outlined them quite thoroughly. Again, I'd love the hear how these classes play out in a longer "campaign" based game though. It's tough to imag...

Really looking forward to GaryCon. The game has come so far since the last playtest, and we have some exciting adventures to run. That, plus a timely pilgrimage. No better way to honor the elders. //H I'm totally jealous. But I'm glad the Colorado contingent is going to be present to "pay thei...

Re: Designer's Blog #3: What Do You Mean, "Vancian"?
A couple things occur to me upon perusing this fine thread... 1. I LOVE the idea of spell cards... LOVE. "Draw from this deck if you roll this. Or from this deck if you roll this." Only drawback is price. And that's a mighty strong motivator / inhibitor, so I can totally see this being an ...

I like the idea of the "Helpless Defender" rule, and I think it scales well with level. As you get to be higher level there are those things which are just instinctual w/in you, mirrored in the increasing save mechanic. In other words, a 1st level fighter that gets that bolt to the chest f...

Re: Appendix O?
How about Jack Whyte's series 'A Dream of Eagles'? I think this is what the movie King Arthur (w/ Clive Owen and Kiera Knightly) was based on. The movie wasn't all that great, but the books are fantastic. I think Tad Williams series 'Shadowmarch' is also pretty good. I just love the way he portrays ...
