Ranks on the boards

Post by finarvyn »

I swear I started this thread the other day, and simply can’t find it anywhere. Apologies if I’ve done it twice. :?

I forget where I saw this, but in the middle of a thread someone posted something to the effect of “darn, I posted and thought I’d go up in rank but I didn’t” and I wondered what ranks were to be found on the Goodman boards. With a couple of days left on winter break (teacher) I was a little bored so I did some quick research.

Some of the cutoff numbers were guesses by me, but it made sense that the person who set up the ranks would pick somewhat round numbers.

Here is my best guess at the ranks on the boards:
0 = unranked
1-2 = Eye Gouger (kobold warrior)
3-14 = Rat King
15-49 = Villainous Minotaur
50-99 = Half-dragon ettin
100-199 = Witch queen
200-299 = Devil lich
300-399 = unknown; no one in this range
400-499 = Arch mage
500+ = Old red dragon ghost

I found it interesting that:
1) No one has posted in the 300’s so I don’t know if there really is a rank in there. (There is quite a jump from 290 to 402.)
2) The ranks appear to stop at 500. (At least Joseph’s 1792 isn’t high enough to bump him to another rank. I suppose it could be at 2000 or something like that, but as far as I know “Old red dragon ghost” is the top dog.)

I think there is an old post somewhere that gives the old names and then the new ones complete with the number of posts to reach each level. I remember reading it soon after I joined but have not looked for it in years. I swear its hear somewhere.

Also I had posted the darn comment and can't find it either. I thought it was in one of your topics but must be wrong. If you find it the response to my post will tell you the missing rank.

I remember that thread, too, but I can't find it either! Anyway, here are the current ranks. I think the thresholds were part of the original phpBB setup. Well, maybe. It's been several years so I don't really remember. :) The rank titles are of course custom verbiage:

Title / # of Posts
Eye Gouger (kobold warrior) / 1
Rat King / 3
Villainous Minotaur / 15
Half-dragon ettin / 50
Witch queen / 100
Devil lich / 200
Arch mage / 300
Old red dragon ghost / 500

Good. I thought I was going crazy. I searched for about 20 minutes trying to find the thread. I was certain it was hidden in the middle of something else, but couldn't find it. :?

Ah ... so there really isn't any title for 400. Interesting. That probably explains DCCfan's confusion. :P

It's also nice to have my guesses confirmed. (Except for that darned 400 "phantom title" thing.)

We could use some more levels above 500. I thinker with that kind of thing on my OD&D boards, but since I have no admin powers here....

Even though it was only ten minutes ago, I can't now remember what made me want to look it up, but I just looked up the original thread (finding this thread along the way) -- for the sake of completeness, here is the link to it: http://www.goodman-games.com/forums/vie ... 08&start=0

The forums definitely need Appendix N-inspired names for various poster ranks. After all, the DCC RPG ain't the game of "half-dragon ettins". ;)

You could even crib titles right off the back cover (adding in one at the base to represent 0-level folks), maybe modding them slightly, and add some others in.

For starters:

Feckless Peasant
Hard-Bitten Adventurer
Bloodthirsty Reaver
Deft-Handed Cutpurse
Steely-Eyed Heathen-Slayer
Tight-Lipped Warlock

Or perhaps use the level titles for one of the key classes, such as the Wizard.

+RAD Colins!

That's a fantastic idea! Do it Joseph!

Though, shouldn't the top rank be a favored ceratopsid?

Heh. I'd give the top rank something like "Barely Human Archmage". ;)

Bottom rank could be 'Pit Person'.

As we need 8 rank titles, so how about:

Ill-Fated Peasant / 1
Far-Sighted Wanderer / 3
Hard-Bitten Adventurer / 15
Deft-Handed Cutpurse / 50
Mighty-Thewed Reaver / 100 (that's a Conan nod ;) )
Steely-Eyed Heathen-Slayer / 200
Tight-Lipped Warlock / 300
Cold-Hearted Immortal / 500+

I would've used the word Patron on the last level, but it didn't sound right. If Immortal doesn't work for folks, how about Deity or God instead?

Awesome idea. Doesn't have to be 8 titles, you can have as many or as few as you want. They don't have to stick the same switchover numbers either. It's customizable like that. :)

Yeah, it's probably time to bump it up a notch or two. I don't think I'm worthy of being this close to the Top tier, just yet, I'm so not worthy.

I think a lot of the lower ranks are too easily attained, so a bit of jiggery-pokery gives us:

Ill-Fated Peasant / 1
Far-Sighted Wanderer / 25
Hard-Bitten Adventurer / 50
Deft-Handed Cutpurse / 100
Mighty-Thewed Reaver / 200
Steely-Eyed Heathen-Slayer / 400
Tight-Lipped Warlock / 600
Cold-Hearted Immortal / 800+

Seriously, these are awesome.

It's been 5 years since the last change? I think in honor of DCC RPG (which, if I had to guess) is the new flagship Goodman Games game, changes are in order!

Hey, don't dismiss the level 0 folks ... I've been reading these boards for almost 6 years and still am under 10 posts but I do buy a lot of GG products ... so changing names at 1, 3, 5, maybe even 9 would be fine by me :D

Okay, so I lied. That's not quite the sequence I went with but it was highly inspriational in creating the final rank list.

And the post-count number sequence is kind of fun, once you see the pattern.

I was thinking about using the XP per level requirements in DCC originally. :)

Thanks for implementing the more DCC-appropriate ranks, especially with the extra titles added.

Tweaked the ranks a little once more.

I decided that it was annoying that a SPAM dude with zero approved posts would get a rank. Now it's set up where you don't get an actual rank until your 3rd post is approved.

In other words, you have to work in order to earn the right to become a "Ill-Fated Peasant"!
