Beyond Monks.

Post by Dko »

Could someone answer a question I have about this book? If I use one of the pristege classes with my Martial artist what will be the base unarmed dammage I will do. Example: I have a lvl 12 Martial artist and 5th level Ki blaster. Will the dammage be that of a lvl 17 char (d20) or only a 12(2d8) or something in between maybe?

d20 is technically the correct answer. Personally, I would use 2d10. You're using the PDF version of the book, and the Goodman Games version is much better, with the ki blaster expanded to 10 levels (and renamed ki adept), and the martial artist tweaked a bit, and lots of new stuff. The 2d10 is what you would have in the new version. Here's the updated damage progression of the martial artist:

1d6
1d6
1d8
1d8
1d8
1d10
1d10
1d10
2d6
2d6
2d6
2d8
2d8
2d8
2d10
2d10
2d10
3d8
3d8
3d8

The longwinded explanation, don't bother reading this unless you just can't sleep like me:
In the PDF version on page 10:
All of the prestige classes in this book require the
Improved Unarmed Strike feat and continue to
improve their unarmed damage as follows:

Unarmed Damage: Add your prestige class
levels with any monk levels, then use the monk’s
table in the Player’s Handbook to determine your
unarmed damage. See page 8 for details on
multiclassing martial artists.

For example, a monk 6/ tanterist 5 would have
the unarmed damage of a 11th level monk (1d10).
and the reference on page 8:
Multiclassing Martial Artists
The rules for multiclassing martial artists are the
same as any other class, except when determining
unarmed damage after multiclassing with the monk
class (or with classes that do unarmed damage as
a monk, like the prestige classes in this book).

To determine unarmed damage for a martial
artist multiclassed as a monk, add the monk and
martial artist levels together and use the monk’s
damage progression for the combined number of
levels. If the damage for your martial artist level
alone is higher, use that instead.

For example, a monk 1/martial artist 6 would
have an unarmed damage of 1d10 for being a 6th
level martial artist, not 1d8 as a 7th level monk.
So your martial artist 12/ ki blaster 5 would be the same as a martial artist 12/ monk 5, therefore: d20 (but I would still use 2d10).

In the Goodman Games book, it works the same, but as I mentioned, the damage progression for martial artists is different, and the wording is different, and a bit more clear. Check out the link at the bottom.

Have fun!
