A woodcutter could scale a wall?

Post by Ogrepuppy »

(pg. 52)

That particular example seems like an little odd fit.

Are you saying because he can climb a tree he can scale a wall?

Walls aren't always a completely shear plane. They can have ledges, window sills, drain pipes, chimney breasts, etc. In general, I would assume a wood cutter has the strength/stamina/dexterity/technique/experience/inclination and general head for heights that allows them to more easily climb walls.

Not to sound contrary or snarky, but I'd expect him to be good at chopping down trees.

Nothing screams "climbs surfaces" to me.

Just picking a nit--I thought the profession and activity were a weird mix. Maybe it's just me.

Little detail: there's a little difference between chopping down a cypress or an oak.

Cypress is vertical, so you can cut it like Daffy Duck did in his Robin Hood's episode; Oak's branches spread in different directions, so you could need to climb on its center platform before cutting them one by one.

Tall trees, especially ones located near existing buildings, are cut down by climbing way up high into them and removing the top branches first than shimmying down a bit and cutting more branches and so on till you get back to the ground.

I had no idea this community knew so much about woodcutters.

But if any of you break out in the Lumberjack Song, I'm running for the hills.

Hm..I think of fairy-tale / medieval woodcutters as going out into the forest by themselves, and coming back with a load of wood on their back. Climbing a tree to cut it sounds more modern / industrial. So I'd expect woodcutters to be good at bearing heavy loads and finding their way in the forest, but not climbing.

Indeed...a roofer or shingler should get the wall climbing ability. The woodcutter should get a +1 against wolves, +2 if it's a Big Bad.

That's kinda what I was thinking. It's a very minor point, but while reading the rules it jumped out at me....and Joseph is looking for our feedback.

So...I'm feeding you some nit-picky back!
