Going forward, Xcrawl will be proudly powered by Pathfinder.

Ha! No, no 4th ED for me.

Actually, Xcrawl is excluded from being able to use the 4E rules due to its content (modern setting + uses real world place names). The license won't let us. Which is sort of a shame except for the fact that I LOVE Pathfinder and am having so much fun converting to it that I absolutely can not WAIT to get it to you folks.

I may have group to playtest for you. Right now we're doing a kind of Intro to Pathfinder campaign (we've already done some 3.5 X-crawl), but I think we might be able to fit this in extra.

Ooooooh.

I've been running a XCrawl game using Pathfinder rules almost every week for about a year now. I'd *love* to have a new set of rules (and hopefully a conversion guide for old crawls too) that specifically deals with Pathfinder. If you'd like any input from me on how the two work together, just let me know, and if you need a solid group of playtesters, I've got one ready!

Currently, we've run the 3.5 Memphis Crawl, the Celebrity Pro-Am crawl, and we're about to wrap up Necromerica in a week or two, so it'd be a great time to swap in new rules if we have some ;)

I've actually been avoiding pathfinder because I didn't want to get into a new system, but for X-crawl I would actually relent and pick it up, looking forward to the new wave, and if you still need play testers I know my group would lunge at the chance. What are the odds we'll see anything by oh, say, August?

Talked to my group and they're really interested in playtesting. Also I've got an idea for a new kind of challenge to put into crawls. The defensive challenge, where you see how long you can last, and then that time is removed from your time in a time base crawl. The team must decide how much resources and damage they want to trade for time.

You could call it the Test of Thermopylae or the Spirit Challenge of the 300. The PC's bid how many waves they can withstand, starting at 3 and increasing in groups of 3, then 2, then 1 at a time with the encounters becoming more difficult at each tier. For each set of waves they withstand they receive prizes on an escalating scale and if they survive the entire challenge they receive x minutes (x equal to the # of the final wave they finished) off of their final time, if a times even, or 1 point per wave they completed (if it's a scored event). The Test may only be invoked (the players must ask for it) either at the start of the XCrawl (before they leave the green room) and then continue the crawl directly after the Test, or when they find a break room, they can call for the Test instead of using the break room, and then continue the crawl directly after the Test. The Test can only be called for once per crawl per team, and if the team falls during the test they are eliminated from the crawl, because if you die, you die!

So for example if Big Al and the Hitmen called for the trial as they were about to leave the green room, and bid 10 waves, they would fight 3 encounters back to back followed by a 30 second (5 rounds) break, then 3 more encounters, a 30 second break, 2 more encounters, a 30 second break, 1 encounter, a 30 second break, and then the final encounter. The first set of encounters would be at the CR of the group and each set of encounters would increase by 1 CR after the first. So if Big Al and the Hitmen were a 4th level team, the first 3 encounters would be CR 4, the second 3 would be CR 5, the next to would be CR 6, followed by a CR 7, and finally a CR8, a real challenge indeed! Prizes would be accrued at the end of each set (3,3,2,1,1, etc) and all prizes can be claimed when the group finishes the dungeon level they are on. Pass the Test, but fail the level and you receive nothing. The gods of fortune are fickle at the best of times.

I have to admit the one thing i thought 4E was good for was going to be x-crawl but i Love pathfinder for the guy that said he didn't want to learn a new system it isn't its 3.5 with upgrades. i cant wait to see what Xcrawl has done with those rules i'm anticipating this more and more and frankly i'm happy WoTC is shooting themselves in the foot they seem to be killing everything i used to love about them. well to be fair magic seems to be coming around somewhat but i'm still not happy with its current form... They kinda screwed over Star Wars from the beginning using it as a D&D testbed rather than its own game they should care for. twice as bad when you look at saga which they used to testbed many of 4E's rules and the result was horrible missing rules. eratta that was months or even years late when it was put out at all. I do hope they wake up slap themselves and put some of the thought that put them at the top of the gaming world back into their works. If not maybe Goodman can buy em out that would be cool right?. Though if you do please dont try to rip dragon dice back away from SFR.

Back to the topic at hand Very Excited to hear That Xcrawl will use Pathfinder rules hope to hear more about this next round of playtests soon

Hey don't forget to go post this on the Paizo 3pp forum to promote it, I reckon it'll get some interest!

Could you respond with either an aye or nay about playtesting for my group. They really hate uncertainty and keep asking me. Also if you don't mind, could you post some examples of whats new, like some info on the new base classes.

Hi, while not playtesters my friends and I have been running the old Xcrawl with the pathfinder books, and I have a few things to mention that might help,

1. If you'll remember the rules forbid incendiary devices outside of normal Alchemist's Fire, this would affect the Alchemist class. While I'm sure you've probably noted that one for yourself, we discovered another problem.

2. In the books the price of a wand of cure light wounds is 750 GP, we've noticed that with one wand and the ability to buy new equipment between rounds for multi-level dungeons, It's hard to balance, if you have a responsible player they may go through 4 maybe 5 charges for an encounter, however it's darn near removed the need for us to even have a cleric.

A way to limit this would help quite a bit in the upcoming X-crawl books.

So sad we have children in our group who can't sign a NDA.

I'm new to the Xcrawl scene, I actualy just picked up the core rules yesterday, and havent had a chance to run anything by my group. (we are using the old 3.5 dnd books) I know my group would love this game, and they would all be willing and able to sign off to do playtesting. I look forward to delving into this new world of adventure.

Just an update - we've finished Necromerica, and are about to finish the second floor of the Coney Island Crawl. Only one more floor stands between them and the Emperor's Cup. We'd still love to play-test the new rules, as long as we can get them before we start the Cup.

Ah, that explains why Amethyst is using real world place names...

Wait, there's something off there. ;)

I think Pathfinder will be a fine fit for Xcrawl and it opens up more options (e.g., you can do a standalone book if you want), but the GSL is fine with modern settings and real world place names, just for the record.

I know it's not the "new hotness", but I have been having fun running Xcrawl in Fantasy Craft. I find that the extra little bits (Lifestyle, Reputation, Renown, etc) blend quite well with the feel of Xcrawl.

Mind you, I am seriously looking forward to an updated version.
Of course, if playtesting spots are still open.... :D )

New status update. We're halfway through the first floor of the Emperor's Cup (which I'm having to convert from 3.0 to Pathfinder, which tends to be time-consuming). I'd still love to see the new rules, and I'm certainly willing to provide feedback, but it's a tossup as to whether we'd actually switch to them now or not.

Pathfinder's new Ultimate Combat has a section on performance combat (gladiatorial matches, etc.) that looks great for X-Crawl with some slight additions. You should really check it out if you have a chance.

X-crawl was one of my favorite 3rd-party campaign settings for 3E D&D. Pathfinder's been my choice as the successor to 3.5, and I've been mulling over starting an X-Crawl style campaign setting under Pathfinder rules. It's awesome to hear about the possible conversion of X-Crawl to Pathfinder rules, and I would love to help playtest.

I've been thinking about running an X-Crawl style of campaign under Pathfinder rules with a bit of Etherscope thrown in. (And I didn't know till visiting this website that there was any connection between XC and ES.) I would love to see X-Crawl be converted to use Pathfinder rules. The Teamwork feats, the loads of extra combat-powers and options many PF core classes and the core races get (especially Fighters), and the combat maneuver system, these would bring a lot of extra flavor to an X-Crawl campaign.

I know I'm coming "Very" late to this party, but, I run an x-crawl group down here in San Antonio and we would be super interested in getting in on this (or any other x-crawl) play-test.

We are a group of 6, including the DJ (myself), we range in ages from 17-46 (the 17 year old is the 46's kid). We have a range of gaming experience from relatively new to myself and another with over 20 years each.

Kinda sad I just stumbled upon this message board, saw something on the pathfinder site that suggested you were going that route (which is fine), but it is what prompted me to look for your site. Of course now this forum is about dead so for me to post anything would look mildly idiotic, as the conversations are many moons old.

Either way, I really hope that this game picks back up. I have a ton of home brew for the world outside of the crawls, that I expanded upon. Mostly fluff, but if you ever need something to check out for some inspiration, by all means hit me up.
Regards,
Mac
