KC Game Fair (KC, MO) - Nov 4-7

Post by tacojohn4547 »

This is just kind of an informational post about a small, regional con in Kansas City, MO next weekend (Nov 4-7). The KC Game Fair will be held at the KC Expo Center, near the KCI airport.

Additional information can be found on the convention site, here:
http://www.kcgamefair.com/

Tim Kask is one of the Guests of Honor and will be running several OD&D games over the weekend.

I'll also be running a couple of games over the weekend, though mine will be under AD&D (natch!). One of these games in particular may be of interest to DCC fans since it will be based on one of the earlier DCC's. Here are the event details for the two games I've submitted to the con admin:

Lost Tomb of the Sphinx Queen – Thursday, 2:00 PM

Event Title: Lost Tomb of the Sphinx Queen
Category: RPG
Game System: AD&D (1E)

Description: Legend tells of an age when Sphinxes ruled a great empire at the dawn of time. The greatest of the Sphinx rulers was Ankharet, the Sphinx Queen, a ruler that saw her reign last for millennia. But in time her heart grew dark, and eventually her subjects and kin cast her down, unable to defeat her outright. What they could not destroy, the victors sought to imprison. A mighty Tomb was constructed, a monument to the once great Sphinx empire, that would also serve as a prison for Ankharet. The characters have been summoned to the Tomb, for it has been prophesied that they and they alone are the heroes that at long last can defeat Ankharet and lift this threat from the word of man.

A high level adventure (PC levels 14-15) for players with some experience.

Event Judge: Jon Hershberger
Event Author: Chris Doyle and Joe Crow
Number of Players: 8
Slot: Thurs. 2PM

Mud Sorcerer’s Tomb – Saturday, 9:00 AM

Event Title: Mud Sorcerer’s Tomb
Category: RPG
Game System: AD&D (1E)

Description: The Jezulein cult was a cult of evil sorcerers and mysticists that specialized in combining elemental magics, particularly the elements of earth and water. Thus, they became known as “mud sorcerers” by their detractors. Regardless of the labels they acquired, in time they amassed great power and wealth, eventually earning the wrath of the other organized religions of the day. The cultists became the benefactors of a continent-wise ‘witch hunt’ that would drive them under ground. They created great tombs for themselves, hoping to wait out, and out live, the fury of the powers aligned against them and one day rise again from their dark tombs to take their place at the top of the world stage. But, their plans never came to pass. The cult was all but snuffed out, the leaders’ tombs lost to the ages, forgotten and dismissed as myth. Until recently…when the entrance to one such mud sorcerer’s tomb was uncovered. The PCs have been asked by the local sages guild to travel to the excavation site, to enter the recently discovered tomb and to claim whatever artifacts, wealth and knowledge that can be claimed from the Mud Sorcerer’s Tomb!

A high level adventure (PC levels 10-14) from the pages of Dungeon magazine, for players with some experience.

I'm looking forward to it as well. I'm signed up with Jedi and Jediwife for Curse of the Sphinx Queen. Still waiting to hear if we're in or not. Either way, I'll be there. I'm looking forward to meeting anyone that might make the trip.

TacoJon,

Thank you so very much for a wonderful first con!

We were unable to get to the end of the much shortened version of the Lost Tomb of the Sphinx Queen, but that did not change the fact it was a blast.

In addition to Ragnar1965, JediWife, and myself, we were joined by three others whose names I don't recall. Two ladies and a gentleman. The two ladies played clerics, and did an outstanding job of it. The gentleman played a thief who had several outstanding back attacks.

Ragnar1965 played a magic-user who used disintegrate to good advantage as well as his wand of wonder. JediWife played an half-elf ranger and added greatly to solving problems. I played a paladin who was suppose to be the main meat shield. It turned out that I shared that roll with one of the clerics and the ranger. I was elected leader but I'm not sure how well I filled that roll.

Super fun. I also picked up several interesting approaches to DMing that I had never considered. Thanks Jon.

Nice! Any highlights from the adventure? Now we just need to get you all out to GaryCon.

I really liked the fight with numerous sphinxes. We had to retreat from the battle, moving further into the tomb. Had we stayed we would have most likely all died, but it would have been a wonderful way to spend an hour or two!

Hah hah! The 'little guy' has nothing to lose but a few pesos, but all the world to gain!

Speaking of wild travel budgets, lessee here (digging out my weekend's receipts) -
gas up and back: $55
hotel: $144 (Extended Stay America, where 39 bucks a night plus tax gets you a clean room, a shower, and a kitchenette)
groceries from the local Price Chopper: $20 (for breakfast, juice, deodorant, and snacks for the weekend)
dinners: $30 (from the nearby Boulevard Grill and Smokehouse BBQ)
lunches: $15 (that's for the whole four-day weekend, mind you)

Yup, them dasterdly Black Blade guys are living large! ;)

(Actually, I'm saving my pesos for the 2011 travel schedule. According to Allan's plans, we're hitting more cons next year than we did this year.)

'Twas my pleasure and honor to be your DM and quasi-con host for Saturday afternoon of the KC Game Fair. You all (that's JediOre, Mrs. JediOre, and Ragnar) did well with the high-level pregens. Running high level PCs, for a game you don't play regularly, is a hard thing to do, and you made a good showing for yourselves.

I hope we can all meet back up again at one or both of the KC game cons next year, and do it all over again. Don't forget to put Kant Con on your summer schedule. It should be held in July, in Overland Park (at JoCo Jr College).

Not too many highlights, I'm afraid. It seemed like the four hours just flew by to me, so it was a bit of a blur. In order to squeeze as much of the adventure as possible into the 4 hour session, I had to speed them through some of the early encounters and talk they around a few things. But as Jedi noted, the entry chamber with the mumified sphinxes was probably the most significant encounter that we played through. And it was a fun one at that.
