Nebin Pendlebrook's Perilous Pantry - 0-level funnel!

Post by Judge Perky »

The sleepy little village of Bitterweed Barrow is gripped by fear. The town’s portly halfling—Nebin Pendlebrook—has vanished without trace. The local constable investigated the matter and now he is missing too! The folks of Bitterweed Barrow have grown fearful of what might have been unleashed upon their village and in desperation have gathered to form a search party. Their task? To find their neighbors and uncover the mystery...

We'll get started as soon as we have at least 4 active players.

If you are interested in playing, please generate 5 0-level characters using the Purple Sorcerer games generator located here:
http://purplesorcerer.com/create_party.php

Please choose the options shown in the picture below.

When you have the results, and then copy and paste your favorite FOUR characters below, adding a NAME and an ALIGNMENT (Law, Neutrality or Chaos) to each of your characters.

You know - my characters are probably the best 3d6 characters I have ever rolled up on first try. And we are going over 4 decades of play here (although most of my characters in the last 15 years have used other methods). I therefore suspect that they will be the first victims of the meat-grinder.

Awesome, folks. That's enough victims for now... Let's get started!

First, here are some guidelines (borrowing liberally from Maestro Raven Croaking):
POSTING EXPECTATIONS & HOW TO DO THIS

It's like an in person game, but instead you just interact by posting on the forum. As the Judge, I lay out what you see, and then you post how each player reacts, roll dice, etc. Then I come back and tell you the results.

I trust you to roll your own dice.

In the case of combat, it is best if you state what you intend to do, then give rolls for INIT, attack rolls, and damage ALL AT THE SAME TIME. Feel free to roll crits and fumbles if you should be fortunate or less so. Then I can narrate the combat round efficiently.

In a 0-level funnel, each player rolls INIT rather than each character.

Re: Nebin Pendlebrook's Perilous Pantry - 0-level funnel!

Post by Judge Perky »

ADVENTURE INTRODUCTION:

The tiny village of Bitterweed Barrow sits on the edge of Ebon Wood, against the Barrier Hills. It is the only home that any of you have ever known. You are not adventurers, rather apple-pickers and shoe-cobblers; blacksmiths and poultry-farmers who form the backbone of this secluded borderland village.

Just last week, one of your neighbors –a portly halfling by the name of Nebin Pendlebrook– was digging into the side of the hill to enlarge his food pantry before the coming winter when his shovel unearthed a long-buried tunnel. No one even knew that the halfling had discovered the mysterious passageway until he was finally noticed missing three days later. Kelvran, the local constable, investigated the matter, and with lantern in hand descended downward into the tunnel to bring Nebin Pendlebrook back. Three more days have passed, and neither man has returned from his descent into the darkness.

So here you are, gathered together at the Bloody Bullfrog Tavern in your work aprons and muddy boots, holding shovels and sheep-shearing knives, to form a makeshift search party. Nebin Pendlebrook’s hillside home is no more than a ten-minute walk from here. Should you anticipate needing any sundry items for the task, this would be the most opportune time to acquire them from the Tavern’s stores, providing you can gather a few copper coins for the purchase. After that, you and your fellow citizens should tighten your belts, hold your makeshift weapons close, and make the short journey to meet whatever fate awaits at Nebin Pendlebrook’s hillside home.

Sitting alone at a table the halfling butcher known only as Kleaver sips his ale as he tries to steady his nerves at the thought of the business the posse is gathered to do. Its only his duty to find out what happened to Nebin that has steeled his nerves enough for him to show up at all.

Grismelda on the other hand stands nearby gesticulating wildly with her hands, one of which clutches her hex doll tight. "Dire be ze portents and uncanny the omens on this day! I have foreseen it! Ze tea leaves speak true that danger be all about us. Still, it is not too late to be forewarned. If any would like to escape whatever terrors fate has in store I will gladly read your future as found in the lines upon your palm. Only 2 copper pieces mind you! And what price can you put on your very life after all?"

Hugh ignores the halflings as he approaches the counter and slaps down his own two coppers. "I'll take a couple of torches. If I'm to venture beneath the earth I'll most likely be needing them soon enough." Its just his luck to be in town when the disappearances happened. Thoughts of a possible reward for locating one or both of the missing persons are the only thing that have brought him out to lend his sword arm.

True to his name, Dhourdem looks out across the tavern floor with a somber look upon his stoic countenance. After Hugh has put in his request for torches he also approaches the tavern master and fishes out some coin. Counting out exactly 30 pieces of copper he sets the coin out in three stacks of ten. "One flask, one sack, and some flint & steel if you will. One never knows what to expect when delving underground."

Despite their varying levels of nerves all four are prepared to set out as soon as the search party is ready to move.

OOC: I went with the assumption that the prices are the same as on the equipment list in the book.

Eibur, the jittery and suspicious potato farmer, shadows his friend Dervos into the tavern. He can only think of his goat tethered outside, and its security. Outgoing Percival, the halfling with hands permanently tinted indigo from years of dye-work, gestures them over to a table. Silas the Ostler, the friend that gathered them for this outing, notices that there are other newcomers. The group falls into discussion, unable to decide whether they should greet the other travelers.

Grom strides confidently into the bar and looks around at all the people, Happy with the turnout. He says to the crowd, "It's nice to see so many of you turn out to help find our neighbors and friends Nebin and Kelvran. Hopefully we can find them and be back soon to our homes and families" Grom heads to the counter and orders 50' of rope (-25cp)

Kreiger and Mavory both show up at the same time and head for an empty table. they had done some chores together a few weeks back and were comfortable with each other.

Smokey as he is known to these people sits in a shadowy corner watching the marks all file in as he thinks to himself, Woo look at all the fat coin purses in here. once we get in the tunnels I can make a fortune. Smokey rolls his eyes as Grom speaks his mind "What a blowhard" he mutters under his breath.

Aloysious (pronounced Aloo-i-shous with a short i) buys flint & steel, a 10 ft pole, 2 torches and a large sack to put everything in, leaving him with 1 cp. He puts his belongings along with the new purchases into the sack and suspends it from the pole over his shoulder in the manner of soldiers (or Dick Whittington), and brandishes his club in the other, fancying himself as rough and menacing. He tilts his cloth cap in a rakish manner, and tries on a few facial expressions, settling for a slight sneer. Along the way to the dwelling hole, he will pick up a few likely rocks for throwing, and add them to his sack.

Slim eyes the crowd, and considers his options. Likely whatever grabbed the halfling will make short work of much of this "posse", and perhaps he can hang back and "assist" in recovering their belongings should they fall prey to whatever grabbed Nebin. He has donned the leather armor, and resists the temptation to buy some beer, keeping his wits sharp. He does buy a torch, a small sack and 1 days rations however, leaving himself with 10 cp, and on his way he too will gather half-a-dozen cobblestones.

Shanaseriel was just passing through, and eavesdrops on the gathering. Intrigued, she decides to go along to see what manner of beast has abducted the hapless halfling, and perhaps more fascinating to her, how these short lived creatures respond to such a threat that was clearly out of their ken. By way of preparation, she buys 1 days rations.

Slobo is naturally upset at the disappearance of his 1st cousin twice removed, and takes it as a personal affront to halflings. In fact he is so worked up that for once he is going to do something about it. Definitely. Absolutely. Right Now. He chugs another beer - since there is no sense in dashing off on an empty stomach, and whoever had bought the beer had clearly forgotten it in their eagerness to share their opinion about the best way for the posse to proceed. Slobo was nobody's fool although he was basically invisible to most of the village. They hardly acknowledged the existence of someone who literally lived under a hedge in a scraped out burrow with a bag of seedy belongings. He was normally a fixture outside the tavern door with his rattling chain and begging bowl. Right now he was taking advantage of that invisibility while eying a bowl of stew and some bread that another patron had left on the table as voices were raised over the disappearance of Nebin.

Kleaver finishes off both his meal and his ale as his eyes dart from person to person who has shown up to join the motley crew that is going to be the search party. Although he does his best to avoid glancing at Grismelda as she does her woeful fortuneteller bit as he's having enough of a hard time trying to keep his cool without her foretelling doom and gloom.

Once she sees that no one is biting on her offer of having their fortunes told the halfling gypsy shrugs and claims a seat at a table so she can also help herself to a meal. Her accent is quite subdued when she orders her food compared to mere moments before when she was prognosticating aloud before the entire crowd gathered at the tavern.

Hugh & Dhourdem share a table and break bread together. Neither says much as they quaff their drink and chew their grub. When all of them have had their fill they each make a last visit to the tavernmaster and opt to purchase a couple of days of rations. None of them are in a particular rush to be the first out the door so they wait until everyone else has had ample time to eat and drink up before they form up near the entrance to the tavern.

OOC: 2x2 will be Hugh & Kleaver in the front and Grismelda & Dhourdem in the back. They're ready to set out when everyone else is.

As you all continue to converse and dilly-dally, September Gruth, the 22-year-old daughter of the owner who cooks, cleans and occasionally plays fiddle, seems to grow impatient. It was September who alerted the constable when Nebin failed to answer his door when she made her regular grocery delivery.

"When are you all gonna get a'move on? I've never known Mr. Pendlebrook to miss a meal (not that he couldn't stand to lose a few pounds), and now its been 4 or 5 days at least since I discovered him a-missin'! And three days since Constable Stockton left lookin' for 'im! The poor little fellow can hardly see without his glasses... he just doesn't seem the exploring type. What are you waitin' fer!? *sob*"

OOC: Suggestion: Why doesn't someone take a crack at a marching order, placing 2 characters from each in front and alternating like this:

Player one A, B
Player two A, B
Player three A, B
Player four A, B
Player one C, D
Player two C, D
Player three C, D
Player four C, D

OK, so for marching order:

Forward: Jim, Aloysius

Rear: Shanaseriel, Slobo.

Slobo now has three pockets full of left-overs, and two outer pockets stuffed with cobble stones. His mouth is also full, but that doesn't stop him from mumbling such awkward things as "I always liked elves. You're all so beautiful", which Shanaseriel does her best to ignore, and she reconsiders her plan to keep to the rear of the motley crew.

Aloysius: It's so refreshing to see the community rally round in these difficult times.
Slim Jim: <rolls eyes> yeah sure. I didn't know 'im myself.
Aloysius: Gosh, that just reaffirms my faith in humanity. You didn't even know him, but you just had to pull together for the sake of community.
Slim Jim: <sideways glance> Yeah, sure. That's what I did. I pulled together for the sake of the community.
