I HAD to have the Doom of the Savage Kings module.

Now if it would just ship!

I'm going to try the game out with my son before bringing it to my gaming group. My group is ensconced in 3.5 Ed DnD and that game is boring me to death anymore.

Both are pretty badass, frankly. I can't wait to get into the module. The book is something that'd cause your mom to freak out in 1983, which is to say "awesome."

Our DM back in the 80s used to have hide his Warhammer 'Realms of Chaos' book from his mother.

That thing was awesome. She found it eventually and destroyed it as a work of evil.

:D

So sad and misguided. Mom's are often so wrong.

That sucks.

Luckily my parents didn't care, and bought me M:TG cards when I was in like 2nd grade.

Well, we are still up to no good reading 'evil' roleplaying books of doom 25 years later, so I guess she failed! :D

I was reading Jon Peterson's PLAYING AT THE WORLD history of OD&D the other day and he discussed the whole "Michigan State steam tunnel" thing from the 1980's and how it helped lead to the whole "D&D is evil" sentiment. Such a shame that folks would condemn something without understanding it; RPGs are a great source of imagination and creativity. Most of the artwork is no worse than what you can find in the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue. No reason for folks to go so nutty. :?

My MIL made a remark about if I was enjoying my "satanic game" last weekend. I think she was just testy from when I asked her why she was reading the "idiot" Sarah Palin's book.

Tit for tat?

I finally got the book yesterday. Very nice! I haven't tried to figure out any hidden message though, I don't even know where to look. But I am still lovingly stroking the 66.5 module (should have been 66.6) that convinced me to buy the LE version of the rules.

Now I need to know, what mini would be best for the Hound of Hirot? I prefer plastic.

I got in the Reaper bones Kickstarter and since the frost/fire giants are so awesome I want to go from this module and then eventually to the old Against the Giants series. I need good Hill Giant mini's though.

I was talking to someone the other day whose mother actually burned his D&D books when he was a kid. Wow! I'd never met someone before who actually experienced a D&D book burning. My mom just thought it was weird.

As for Doom of the Savage Kings, yes, I did consider calling it #66.6. But decided not to. :)

Hah! That was probably a good call. While I love 70's style old-school gaming, I'd prefer not to re-live the devil-worshiping ritual-conjuring religious fanatical hoopla that was also around back then :)

The news reports had my mom a little concerned and one night she asked a bunch of questions about it after a big special was on TV. I convinced her to try it out firsthand and she rolled up a thief with 1 hp. I tried to get her to re-roll it but she wouldn't listen. The game then started with her thief approaching a ruined castle wall. Scouting the outside of it she found a hole in the wall, just big enough to crawl through. She decided to squeeze through and on the other side a carrior crawler was waiting in the rubble. She died on the first attack.

The entire game lasted about 15 minutes if you count character creation and a brief explanation of the rules, lol. It was enough to show her the game was safe I guess though.

My Mom was (and is) pretty religious and strongly Christian. I never recall her doing anything to discourage my D&D playing (which I really got into by the time I was in third grade - very early eighties).

I asked her about it recently and she said. "Well, I tried to sit in and play with you once. But mostly I just thought it was really boring." So, she was mostly just disappointed that I was getting to the age where I had interests that she wasn't going to participate in as much any more.

My parents did help me put on a D&D themed birthday party in 4th grade though.

Go Mom!

Yes, here's to moms who supported D&D! My mom did once refer to my miniatures as "those silly little figures you like to paint." Ha! I still laugh at that. She only let it slip just that once but I think she did consider the whole hobby kind of silly. But she didn't interfere with it (or burn my books!).

My mother bought me the Moldvay Basic Set when we were out shopping.

She had seen children at school (where she worked as a teacher) enjoying the game and thought I would as well.

Thanks mom! I guess I was very lucky :D

My mom was just happy something shut me up and kept me quietly scribbling away in a notebook for hours and hours at a time.

If it had been Satanic, she would have thought twice about saying something.

Speaking of awesome moms, you should read this thread: A Tribute.

That link was very cool Rick. Minor choke up for Doug.
My mom was and is a reader too. I attribute most of my love of literature (and art) to her.

Fantastic post, thanks a lot! My mom was also supportive of something recreational that also worked the brain. Where would the world be without awesome moms ?!?

I'm another in the "lucky to have a great mom" camp. She bought me the Moldvay basic set and sat through a couple of my first fumbling attempts to DM. She was also very supportive of my entire gaming youth, allowing me to have folks over fairly regularly (or ferrying me to whatever other family's house we were playing at) and that sort of thing.

She remains all kinds of awesome to this day, even if she's stunned that I'm still messing around with these kinds of games 30-odd years later. Thanks, mom! Now get to practicing that ukulele we got you for your 78th birthday :)

My mother was glad I didn't get into drugs and bad company, plus she saw how much my social skills developed since I began playing. Her only problem was that it's expensive. Religion is not a big deal in Hungary, most of us doesn't cares about it, except if you're member of a wealthy sect or you're annoying people with your zeal - those are good ways to become a public enemy.
