This mirrors my own experience. I have high hopes for DCC as well.

Well, I don't know about any of you, but my beta playtest input will consist mainly of arguing that DCC should be re-imagined as a sci-fi game.

With dinosaurs. Big, smelly dinosaurs.

And cars with guns on them.

Yup.

This is an indication that the direction taken with 3.5 was essentially flawed. Aberrations like that one are not possible with 3.0.

But then it couldn't be DCC (Dungeon Crawl Classics) but instead perhaps SCC (Starship Crawl Classics). Just sayin' you can't change the genre without changing the name.

[3.5] aberrations came from not Core Products, while [3.0] was itself an aberration thanks to Harm (the only spell able to kill a dragon in couple of rounds).

The problem with [3.X] was the playtesting, done in the wrong way.

Being Appendix N mainly a collection of 3 genres (Fantasy, SF and Science Fantasy) a DM can shift from Fantasy to Science Fantasy pretty easily IMHO.

DCC = Doomed Carrier Crawling or something like that should still work, with a SF setting.

Well yeah, 3.5 got no playtesting at all it seems (vs the 700-ish playtesters of 3.0,) and with much more "moving parts" than 3.0 already in the core (triple the number of feats nerfing many of them, some stupid/broken prestige classes (theurgist anyone?,) nerfing spells, the paladin's pokemount, the anal grid system etc.) it was much more prone to "crashing" and "strange" outcomes in play.
The Harm spell was powerful in all the previous versions of the game. So if "aberration" means fidelity to the original concepts...then yes, 3.0 definitely earns its name.
Hopefully DCC rpg will be much more easier to assess and playtest correctly!

It doesn't matter the number, but the way you test.
Unfortunately, they didn't fixed the fact that [3.0] was powerplaying friendly since its beginning (90d6 of damage in a single round for a 20th level character are maybe too much).

That means that in 30years they hadn't fix a bug.. good job, indeed.

Open playtest is always better than a close one, for sure.

The good folks of the DGA have invited us back to Tacticon! We'll be running multiple sessions of the DCC RPG over Labor Day weekend, playtesting upcoming adventures.

And since the the beta will have been completed by then, you might even get a sneak peak at the final release!

While ours is not an "official" playtest, if you happen to live in the St. Louis area and are interested in trying out DCC RPG on Sunday evenings from about 6:30PM to 10:30PM, send me a personal message.

There has to be someone on your side of the pond who can download and run a session! Just use the Beta download and any AD&D module of your choice....

Hi all:
I'm trying to get together some playtests for DCC in the Austin, Texas, area. Initially, my idea was to have an open table here at Dragon's Lair but they're horrible at managing their events. If anyone has any swing with them, please feel free to pull strings on my behalf. After 5 tries, I've yet to get a response via email or phone. Sad state of affairs over there.

If anyone in my area is interested, PM me. We'll work something out.

As fate would have it, today was the day Dragon's Lair got back to me.

So I'm scheduled to run DCC up there starting at 5pm this Saturday (Free RPG Day, Austin, Texas). I have the materials to run both the adventures in the DCC Free RPG Day module. And, players willing, I plan to.

So come on out and get your d30 on.

Cardiff is very light on rpg groups, my group is in the middle of the Crimson Throne so reluctant to have a go. Also their difficult to convince to give new games a go anyway. Once the rpg day adventures are available I'm going to see if they'll let me run a couple of demo sessions. Not holding my breath though.

Just wanted to say thanks to Shane and Mel from Dicehead Games for hosting some great games on Friday. And thanks to Todd, Rick, Bill, and everyone else for driving so far to make the session!

hey Joseph, i really enjoyed the game you ran at dicehead! i felt like i lucked out! i got four characters to everyone's one! with zero levels you don't even need to know that much of rules, it's just grab and run! you got a great game on your hands. looking forward to playing it wherever i might chance to.

Kim! That was a lot of fun. You were quite brave to play the 0-level henchmen in a level 4 party. The Lost Boys will always be remembered. :)

Would anyone be interested in running a game over skype or IRC using the free RPG day module?
I'd love to get into a game, but our local FLGS is totally hung up on 4E, and nobody there really likes to stray from it.

The Connecticon members Shop in Newington Connecticut would like to run a playtest/demo day in August. The owner of the shop is very interested in carrying the line once released and we want to get people in to play the game.

If we wanted to run a playtest/Demo do we need to do anything special or just go to it?

Nope. The Beta rules are a free download, find yourself some funky dice (or just "fake it" like I do most of the time), and grab an adventure. Any beginner D&D adventure works pretty well, except that 4E adventures are a lot harder to convert on the fly. The "Free RPG Day" module can be downloaded for under $5, if you want something "official."

That's it! 8)

Oh, then report back!

We think we may get T-Shirts done; "I was there when the Devil Snake cult was reborn" Thanks for the great game(s)

Awesome! Thanks for letting us know. Finarvyn covered the bases. By August I may have some new posters and other swag available, depending on the timing...shoot me an email when the date gets closer!

London, England Playtest Re: Upcoming playtests of DCC RPG

Hey,

I've been playing games for a long time and recently downloaded and read through the DCC Beta. Anyone in London want to go for an (unofficial) playtest. We could make this a multi-session playtest if there is interested. I am in central london and could host in Camden or we could meet up somewhere else. Post a reply here, or message me if you're interested.
Cheers!
