Spellburn (p93)

Post by AgeOfFable »

It says that wizards recover 1 point of ability score per day that they don't sacrifice any further ability scores. Is this intended to be 1 point per ability, or 1 point in total? If the latter, and the wizard has lowered more than one ability, how is it decided which ability score?

1 point, per ability, per day. You can recoup Agility, Stamina and Strength all at the same time.

So, if I understand correctly, it is entirely the DM's option as to whether Spellburn requires permanent "flavorful" maiming.

E.g. some spellburn rules suggest cutting off tips of fingers (entry 4 on Table 5-1, page 94) - this might mean the whole joint of the finger, or it might mean just a small chunk that won't permanently maim.

However, it seems Table 5-1 is optional. At any rate, the required action might be only suitable for out-of-combat rituals; it would probably take hours to ritually scarify, brand, or tattoo oneself with the proper symbol. Thus if one wanted to spellburn in combat, with a split second's notice, the DM might rule that one simply takes ability damage as extradimensional spirits drink your bone marrow or whatever. Am I correct in this interpretation?
