So, if I understand correctly, it is entirely the DM's option as to whether Spellburn requires permanent "flavorful" maiming.
E.g. some spellburn rules suggest cutting off tips of fingers (entry 4 on Table 5-1, page 94) - this might mean the whole joint of the finger, or it might mean just a small chunk that won't permanently maim.
However, it seems Table 5-1 is optional. At any rate, the required action might be only suitable for out-of-combat rituals; it would probably take hours to ritually scarify, brand, or tattoo oneself with the proper symbol. Thus if one wanted to spellburn in combat, with a split second's notice, the DM might rule that one simply takes ability damage as extradimensional spirits drink your bone marrow or whatever. Am I correct in this interpretation?
