DCC Collector's Corner

I’ve gotten a lot of questions concerning DCC collectibility and editions, so I’ve started this sticky thread to answer some of them. Feel free to chime in with comments or additional questions that aren’t answered here.

How Do I Know if It’s a Reprint?

This question has started to crop up as the DCCs are moving into second and third printings. Here’s a quick guide to these books as they’re being reprinted. Remind me to update this thread as more come out!

DCC #0: Legends are Made, not Born: This module has had two printings. The first printing was for Dundracon 2004. It features the old Goodman Games logo and a cover that’s a little more lime green than the second printing, which was released to stores in late 2004. The second printing features the new Goodman Games logo.

DCC #1: Idylls of the Rat King: The first printing featured cover art by Jeff Doten and uses 3.0 rules. The second printing featured cover art by William McAusland and uses 3.5 rules. The third printing features cover art by Jim Holloway and is not materially different from prior printings.

DCC #2: The Lost Vault of Tsathzar Rho: In its third printing. The first printing featured cover art by Rob Thomas and uses 3.0 rules. The second printing features cover art by Jim Holloway and uses 3.5 rules. The third printing is similar to the second but has different colored text on the cover.

DCC #3: The Mysterious Tower: In its second printing. The two printings are identical except the second features the phrase “second printing” at the end of the legal text on page 27.

DCC #4: Bloody Jack’s Gold: In its second printing. The two printings are identical except the second features the phrase “second printing” at the end of the legal text on page 30.

DCC #5: Aerie of the Crow God: In its second printing. Both editions feature similar but different cover art by Chuck Whelon. The second printing is an expanded 64 pages with the sequel adventure Seed of Evil.

DCC #6: Temple of the Dragon Cult: In its second printing. The first printing features the old Goodman Games logo; the second printing has the new logo.

DCC #7: Secret of Smuggler’s Cove: In its second printing. The first printing features the old Goodman Games logo; the second printing has the new logo.

DCC #8: Mysteries of the Drow: In its second printing. The first printing features the old Goodman Games logo; the second printing has the new logo.

DCC #9: Dungeon Geomorphs: In its second printing. The first printing features the old Goodman Games logo; the second printing has the new logo.

DCC #10: The Sunless Garden: In its second printing. The first printing features the old Goodman Games logo; the second printing has the new logo.

DCC #11: The Dragonfiend Pact: In its second printing. The first printing features the old Goodman Games logo; the second printing has the new logo.

DCC #12: The Blackguard's Revenge: In its second printing. The first printing features the old Goodman Games logo; the second printing has the new logo.

DCC #13: Crypt of the Devil Lich: In its second printing. The first printing is in color and features the old Goodman Games logo; the second printing is in B/W and has the new logo.

DCC #14: Dungeon Interludes: In its second printing. The first printing features the old Goodman Games logo; the second printing has the new logo and different colored title text.

DCC #15: Lost Tomb of the Sphinx Queen: In its second printing. The first printing features the old Goodman Games logo; the second printing has the new logo.

DCC #17: Legacy of the Savage Kings: In its second printing. The first printing features the old Goodman Games logo; the second printing has the new logo.

DCC #16 and DCC #18 onward all are in their first printings.

Is DCC #3.5 Real?

Yes, it’s the convention special from Gen Con 2003. If you’re a collector, this is the one to get – authored by Dave Arneson, with most copies autographed by him at Gen Con. Copies have sold on EBay for $200+. (Makes me wish I saved a few!)

What are the Other Con Specials?

In addition to #3.5, there is also #20.5: Mask of Death, from Gen Con 2005 (tied to the new film The Gamers: Dorkness Rising). We’ve produced two convention specials for Dundracon: #0: Legends are Made, Not Born for Dundracon 2004, and #17.5: War of the Witch Queen for Dundracon 2005. Finally, there is the 1E edition of #12.5: Iron Crypt of the Heretics, produced for Gen Con 2006.

Anything Else?

If there are other collector questions, here is the place to ask them – just let me know!

Dear DCC collectors:

I have been going through my collection of DCC modules and realized I have a few too many copies of the first ed DCC #1 and #2. Rather than be a total putz and put these up on Ebay, feel free to email me if you're interested at benwax@aol.com. Let me know what you feel is reasonable, and after a week or so I'll try to make as many people as I can happy.

Rock on Goodman Games!

Ben "don't bogart those modules" Waxman

p.s. I will trade for a DCC 12.5 special 1st ed module sold at this year's GenCon in lieu of payment.

Anyone seen any signs on the Acaeum or other sites that discuss value of DCC's and DCC merchandise? Who knows, maybe that "bookmark of doom" from 2 years ago will be worth big bucks someday?

Also wondering about the approximate value of the convention specials, and other semi rare finds.

Not that a superfan would be giving up his stuff anytime soon. Still, as I sit in the cold dark of my basement, clutching at "my precious" items, it's nice to know that I've made a good investment. :D

Fight on folks,

There is nothing on The Acaeum regarding these modules really. The occasional post about seeing one of the true rares up on eBay, with some speculation, but nothing real. The Acaeum pretty much stears clear of 3rd edition. When the topic does come up, it usually turns into a flame war between the grognards refusing to give up 1st edition, and the younger crowd who are perfectly happy with d20. But even a number of the grognards will grudgingly admit that the DCC line of module is the sole exception to d20 being cr@p. :D
And because they are so rare on eBay, their prices can fluxuate quite a bit, depending on how well the seller markets it, and how many interested buyers happen to do a search for it that week.

Based on my experience, these are the rough numbers I would give:
#0 first print - $20
#1 & #2 first prints - Cover Price
#3.5 - $150 - $200
#17.5 - $60
#20.5 - $40

Another very difficult module to find is DCC#10. It's simply never on eBay, and the most frequent one not found at all in a game store. :?

DCC 10 (and 3.5/20.5) is the main 'regular' module I'm missing.....

Bob,

Hear your pain my brother!

I found a site online that had module #10, The Sunless Garden, and had it for less than cover price. I had to pick up an extra for myself, and finally pick up the Ripper and Into the Wilds that I missed at my gamestore. Free shipping for purchases over 25 bucks. A steal on a difficult to find module. Hope it's not a misprint!

Wow, thanks for the head's up, Ben - my order is already placed :)

Now to just hope you didn't take the last copy......

Bob,

If I got the last copy, I'll sell it to you for cost. I'm no hog (well I am, but not in regard to DCC).

Well, got a confirmation email from them saying it was being sent out so hopefully we're both in good shape - thanks very much for the offer though!

They were lying - just got another email saying basically 'sorry, we just checked and we no longer have that item in stock'. Did yours get mailed, Ben? You must have managed to grab the last one as I feared.....

Nope...got the same sad email. I'll stay on the prowl and keep you informed!

I really really hate it when sites don't keep their inventory up to date - they let you get all excited about the fact that they have something in stock that you've been searching for for months, then it's a real kick in the balls when you get that 'sorry, but....' email :(

Hey Bob and Superfan,

I'm not a collector for the sake of collection value, but because I'm kind of a product junkie. But, be that as it may...

I found an online retail website that still purports to have coies of the Sunless Garden (DCC#10) STILL ON HAND. Needless to say I ordered two copies. They took my money and I got an order/delivery confirmation email the following day.

The site didn't show an active inventory of stock, so one could assume there aren't many left (or any, for that matter). But, you don't know until you place your order and the box arrives.

Anyway, you might see what you can find. Maybe you'll get lucky too.

tacojohn4547

PS... you thought I was going to tempt you with this and then not give the site, didn't you? I'm not that cruel. Check out www.rpgshop.com

Oh, neither am I - I don't pick up additional copies of modules I already have just because one is a first printing, or has an alternative cover etc, as long as I have a copy of some variety I'm happy. Which is why missing DCC10 was a pain, it's not like it was a convention special like DCC3.5 or DCC20.5 etc.

I'm just curious here, but if you're not a collector for the sake of collection value, why buy two copies?

I was about to say something :) Anyway, my order is placed, so let's hope they had at least three copies in the warehouse! Four for Ben's sake!

Thanks for the head's up, btw :)

To quote my new good friend Grodog, "trade bait".

While I may not be a collector in the purest sense of the word, I'm not above buying a few extra copies of really good, or somewhat rare, products for trading purposes, or to use as gifts for gaming friends.

In the case of the DCC #10, I had intended to get that one for a long time, but didn't for whatever reason. Then it seemed to become "scarce". When I saw them still supposedly available at rpgshop, I ordered a couple since I knew them to be more scarce than some of the others.

I hope you get your order. And I hope Ben gets his.

Don't you worry about little ol' me. I've got my original DCC #10 safely bagged and boarded. I was just looking for my good friend, and thought I'd get a little "trade bait" of my own.

Now, must get back to my planning.....I will be storming Taco's house with an elite crew of special ops folks to "liberate" him from his sole copy of DCC 12.5 1E edition.

I mean, who should have this module, the superfan, or the author.....

exactly my thinking!

"Men....moving out!!!!" :D

[…….”And another thing, chief. I think we should move that copy of the GenCon 2006 release of DCC #12.5 down to sub-level 6. You should have put it down there with the near-mint copy of Tegel Manor and DCC #35 that you got at Indy. The atmospheric control systems down there in the archive vaults have just undergone the Dri-Max upgrade, and we completed the system diagnostics last week. Those archive vaults are as dry as the salt mines.”

Taco: “Roger that, Mr. Johnson. Anything else?”

Security Chief Johnson: “No sir. Commencing security system activation sequence, on my mark…………mark”

Taco: “Perimeter security systems”

Security Chief Johnson: “Perimeter security systems, check”

Taco: “Kill zone systems”

Security Chief Johnson: “Kill zone systems, check”

Taco: “Internal monitoring systems”

Security Chief Johnson: “Internal monitoring systems, check”

Taco: “Sub-level life support systems”

Security Chief Johnson: “Sub-level life support systems, check”

Taco: “Archive vault control systems”

Security Chief Johnson: “Archive vault control systems, check”

Taco: “All systems look good, Mr. Johnson”

Security Chief Johnson: “I concur, sir. My panel shows nothing but green. Have a good night, sir.”]

Yay! My copy of DCC10 has arrived, in great shape! Many thanks for the head's up, tacojohn :)

Now I just need to get a DCC30 - according to my FLGS, it's out of print?!?! Are they for real?? It's still available direct from GMG; but according to my man at the store "I can't get DCC30 as it's out of print". I believe he orders from Diamond, who really have no clue at all in my experience when it comes to games and what is in/out of stock - might be worth seeing if they want to pick up a few more copies?

DCC #30 is very much in print! Please print this email and take it to your store:

September 11, 2006

Dear Friendly Local Game Retailer,

This is Joseph Goodman, President of Goodman Games. I have been informed that you conveyed to one of your customers that Dungeon Crawl Classics #30: Vault of the Dragon Kings is "out of print." Please be informed that it is available and in stock at my warehouse. In fact, it was just released to stores only 6 weeks ago. If you are unable to get a copy from your supplier, please contact me at info@goodman-games.com and I'll make sure you get one.

Thanks,
Joseph

Thanks Joseph, I'll pass that on. Like I said, I'm sad to say that generally this guy seems to believe whatever crap his distributor tells him - perhaps this will go some way to prove that I'm right when I tell him his distributor is lying to him! It's happened *plenty* of times in the past too, for other products; you'd almost think that the distributors don't care whether they move product or not....

I noticed some DCCs had soundtracks. Is there a soundtrack available seperately for use with other DCCs (a generic soundtrack)? Or even non-modular adventuring with Aereth?

DCC #34: Cage of Delirium includes the soundtrack "Gates of Delirium," from Midnight Syndicate. We don't publish separate gaming soundtracks, but Midnight Syndicate has several of them (including the official D&D soundtrack). They're great for gaming music. You can learn more here:

http://www.midnightsyndicate.com/

Follow the links to the "Discography" section for the D&D soundtrack and others.

I have everything Midnight Syndicate has done, and I can't recommend it highly enough! Every CD is awesome. I don't just use them for gaming, I use them every single evening as background music around the house. :D
