At the beginning of May 2008, I quit the job I'd been at for the past 4 years (which had slowly but inexorably been driving me insane--literally, insane) to go work for a new company which offered better money, hours, and less insanity.

The new company, due to the recession, laid off approx. 20% of their employees seven months later in December 2008 (including me).

New York State has a wonderful Unemployment plan, so I've been able to pay bills and help my wife keep us afloat for the past several months. (She's a teacher, so she's not likely to lose her job soon.)

When the Unemployment runs out (in a few weeks)...I'm looking down the barrel of some serious bad news. (Unless I can find a job quickly!)

@ Gnomie: I'll try to get a response to you soon.

Yikes, Ogre. Things haven't been so bad where I live but it has got to be rough out east.

I've been working since I left college at 19 years old, and I have relatively few bills, so I've been enjoying some time off despite not having any spare cash. It's not all bad--I get to be a house husband for a while, which is a role I'm OK with.

The only really discouraging thing is looking at the job postings and seeing a crap-ton of stuff that I'm either utterly not qualified to do or seeing things that require "5 or more years of experience in this field, plus a masters degree in that field" kinda BS. I have several years of experience in tech and IT-related fields, but not that much!

Thanks for the...positive thoughts! I'm sure we'll be fine.

...I hope.
