Why is it called funnel?

Post by midges »

Maybe it is just me who wonders, as I am not a native speaker but:

Isn't a funnel a device where EVERYTHING that goes in comes out (unless you pour too fast)? Isn't 0-level DCC the exact opposite? Why didn't you call it filter or sieve?

cheers,

midges

I believe this was Joseph Goodman's reasoning for calling it a "funnel."

While I love Mr. Curtis' answer, I think it has to do with the shape of a funnel.

• Wide at the top (lots of characters)

• Narrow at the bottom (far fewer characters)

That is true, the analogy breaks down when you look too closely.

There are common substances (cinnamon springs to mind [but then again, when doesn't it?]) that when you try to put them through a funnel, a bit comes through, but the rest of the stuff hangs up in the funnel.

I submit the analogy stands.

Because "character Klein bottle" just doesn't have the same ring to it...

Foolish Peasants & Yeoman are concentrated together as a funnel might do and are then ‘funnelled’ through the underworld.

I guess the funnel refers to the gathering of the hapless at the beginning of the game rather than the thinning out by the end of it.

Everything that goes in comes out. Usually in small pieces. :)

Earlier today, something made me think of the term 'funnel cloud' which is something that often leaves fewer folks alive in its wake than were in it's path...

And also, I then thought of funnel cake, too. Because, funnel cake.
