Appendix N short stories as Handouts

Post by Sir Robilar »

So I recently plugged a desert into my campaign world, called it Yondo and had the characters find a scroll in a wizard's grimoire: "The Abominations of Yondo" (by Clark Ashton Smith). They seemed to like it
so I'll go along with the idea and plug other short stories into the campaign. I believe they can convey the atmosphere of Appendix N in a way my mere words can't.

Now I'm thinking about other short stories that would work well.

Has anyone else tried something like this?

I've done this with a few paragraphs from a story, just to set the mood. Using the whole story always seemed kind of long, unless they are getting it in between sessions.

I gave it to them at the end of the session and told them it's not mandatory to read. What story did you use?

Actually, I was running an Amber Diceless game at the time and used a passage from Nine Princes in Amber.

I've thought about using bits of Robert E Howard horror stories. He has several Cthulhu stories that I particularly like, and if I run a "creepy monolith" scenario or one with odd pictish sub-humans he has some neat details.
