I simply can't imagine mentioning this village from Doom of the Savage Kings without my players cracking jokes for the next 10 minutes.

Maybe I just have immature players.

Hard T? Hard H? How do you say it without sounding like the bad stereotype of a chinese guy saying "hello"?

Indeed. It was inspired by Heorot in the saga of Beowolf.

Assuming it is an English word, it may sound either /ˈhaiəɹət/ (rhyming to "pirate") or /ˈhɪɹət/ (and also probably /ˈhɪɹɒt/); however, I would definitely go with /ˈhirɔ/ (partly to achieve a Japanese sounding as the spelling strongly suggests it, and partly because of the slightly different sounds of Hungarian, my mother tongue)

Edit: Anyway, wrote it, posted it.

Or you can go with a French pronunciation: ee-rro ("hero" with a much longer "e")

Beowulf on Audible.com

Click on "Sample" beneath the book cover; listen for it approx 30 seconds into the clip.

He's actually saying "Heorot", but like Colin said, that's what inspired the name.
