Old School Character & Monster Tokens

I'd love to see some old school character & monster tokens. I've never really had the patience to assemble and paint metal minis and while the plastic ones from WotC did the job they never really inspired. But I really like the tokens that both WotC and Paizo have started doing. They're relatively cheap and you get a good selection. But imagine those tokens with character and monster art by Kovacs and Mullen!!! Properly old school and incredibly evocative!

My problem with the idea of DCC tokens are:
  • DCC emphasizes creating unique monsters for every adventure. You can't have tokens for every possible creature, so you would have to use tokens of other creatures as placeholders.
  • Tokens aren't big enough to put meaningful art on them. Chunks and pieces of eg. Kovacs and Mullen art don't do their work justice.
Thankfully nothing holds you back from using tokens you get from other publishers and products. Purple Sorcerer even made paper miniatures for their DCC RPG adventure: http://purplesorcerer.com/sc1.htm.

Of course, this pre-supposes that gamers are playing DCC RPG with a battlemat or something like that, and the game doesn't stress this in the same way as 4E or other RPGs do.

It would be fun to have a selection of character tokens to pick from, for both PC and NPC use. I'll confess that when I game I avoid actual minis most of the time, and use dice and coins and buttons and stuff like that as tokens. Monsters could be interesting as well if a set could be done for the Goodman Games DCC modules with later "add on" pages as additional modules got written.

I think it's a cool idea, but am curious as to how many people would actually buy and use them.

Count me out. I play Pathfinder quite a bit and one of the things that I find really refreshing is that DCC RPG doesn't use minis and battlemats. I get tired of carting all of that around for my Pathfinder games. Also, the added expense is annoying. Perhaps there is a market for this. It isn't me, however.

I play a few different systems (DCC, Pathfinder, Shadowrun, World of Darkness, Savage Worlds, etc.) and my opinion is pretty much the same on all fronts:

I don't use minis and maps - except when I do. Some encounters taking place in particularly interesting terrain with numerous enemies benefit from added visualization tools, but most encounters don't.

I already have a mat I can draw whatever I want on it, and already have the whole first set of Pathfinder Battles miniatures (I have gotten rid of all other sorts of minis) - so the only things that would encourage me to buy new maps & minis/tokens are actually unlikely to ever exist.

I'd love to have a vinyl battle map with 1/2 inch square grid on one side and 1/2 inch hex grid on the reverse, and a line of miniatures built to scale to fit said mat at 1" = 1 yard scale.
