Question about Ogres

Post by jeff »

I was just wondering. What critical hit chart do Ogres use, giant or humanoid?

It appears to me that the ogre is the low end of the giant category; his 4 HD coincide with the start of the giant critical table. The combat tactics feel giantish also.

I use the Giant table because of their size. I assume that Humanoids have to be roughly man-sized. (I remember the Cave Trolls from the LotR movie and they seemed pretty big, and I equate Ogres with Trolls size-wise. That's how my brain works. You can ignore the thought process if you like.)

The key here is that you can "fake it" by just making a quick ruling and moving on. If your Ogres are big humans use the humanoid table, but if they are small Giants use the Giant table.

Some use humanoid and some use giant. They cheat like that...

It depends... The striped cycloptic hairy ones from the Baal-Gurgoloth mountains count as giants, and the green skinned slim ones from the Forest of Maneterr count as humanoids - those silly villagers think it's dryads that lure their men into the woods, but instead, ogres to have more food.

Here's the answer from my home game: um... what's an ogre?

I love DCC... especially fond of monsters not having names until the players give them one... thus far the only thing they called an Ogre was a 9' tall deep red skinned humanoid with gorilla-like build and a boar's head.
