Random Stuff Chart

Post by Doug Kovacs »

Maybe you can link this with the resources thread Harley. Marv?

I've been using this chart in addition to the zero level equipment since a time (circa 2010) when zero level characters were not even guaranteed a weapon. That's right, early on before the beta version of the game your butcher might have been naive enough to enter The Portal Under The Stars without even taking his cleaver along. What could go wrong?

It is all fairly mundane stuff. Rolls mostly generate things only useful to players with creativity. To an actual adventurer with real equipment much of this may seem useless. It originally appeared here :http://dougkovacs.com/dkblog/?p=652 but I'm sure many people missed it. I have found it can also supplement minor treasure when players ask "is there anything else" DM: "Sure.. roll d100.... there is also a spiked belt." In some instances the friendly cat might also be a dead friendly cat.

The one divergence from the mundane is #99 ; The Eyes of the Overworld. If you have read the Jack Vance book of the same name and feel confident in doing some seat of your pants DMing you should go for it. Maybe make the character realize they have been under a spell all along to return the the eyes to Iucounu the laughing Magician. If not, make it a shovel or a can of beans or something else, then read The eyes of the Overworld . If you are already running DCC RPG , you won't regret it

Cool. You are welcome.

If you ever roll "82 girdle of matrimony" let me know what that means. I haven't had anyone get that in a game yet, but it begs for mayhem.

At the very least, it could start a fight among the ladies that see your character strolling into town with his "cool new belt," as they tear at each other tooth and nail trying to reach you first, each more crazed than the last with desire to pry the belt from your waist and thus claim you as husband.

Three things:

(1) Excellent chart,

(2) I have read Eyes of the Overworld and want my own duck-footed car, and

(3) Yoink!

I could slide these posts in with the other thread, but I kind of like having this its own thread. I'm afraid that this would get lost in the middle of another thread, but it gets top billing here. 8)

Your call, however. If you want it moved I can move it.

I used this today when the party cut open the giant shark they'd just killed (yeah, like in Jaws) to see what odd or unusual things it might've swallowed.

They found a spear, a bundle of sharp sticks, a leather apron, a holy symbol, a white flag, a skeleton key and a flask of bad wine.

I think this is the same table we used at the pickup game with my kids last GaryCon....right?

If so..it gets three thumbs up and the Skach Seal of Approval! :)

Seriously..the kids love that kind of stuff. They loved rolling and getting odd things and then later perusing the list fascinated them.

Great table, I used it tonight with very interresting results! "A Compass ??? What should I do with a compass???" the beekeeper said.
And I had to stat "klartesh" on the spot: I made it a magic powder/drug that gives +1 Str/-1 Int to your character for 1d5 rounds.

What couldn't you do with a compass? It could either help you draw circles or show you which way is north. Come on beekeeper you'll never become a proper adventurer with that attitude.

Klartesh has been my default illegal substance in games for many many years. It is defiantly not wine or beer. I think I might have stole it from the Thieves World series edited by Robert Asprin, but somebody can tell me if that is true.

I like the idea that exactly what Klartesh is remains kind of ambiguous. As a DM I like to let it be what the players want it to be.

I have found that the Hackmaster GM's screen has some great tables for describing objects and conditions of rooms in a dungeon. A good portion of the tables are system generic and there are sections for dungeons, wilderness, towns, etc.
