d34 discussion

Post by finarvyn »

Becasue of the DCC RPG and it's use of "funky dice" I'm always on the lookout for good chatter about unusual dice. Not to toally pimp my own forum, but there is an interesting discussion of the d34 on my OD&D Discussion board.

One interesting observation is that 3d34-2 gives a 1-100 bell distrobution. Not quite percentile dice because it's centered in the middle, but a cool thing nonetheless.

Might be useful somehow! 8)

i first bumped into a d34 about a year ago, and wondered aloud what was it for??? It seemed odd for the sake of odd, but I wondered if there was a game out there that used that range for something...

It was immediately pointed out that, yes, 3d34-2 is a bell-curved 1-100. And I thought, oh, okay, that's cool. Kinda made me want to get a set...

But I still don't know what the heck you use a 'curved 1-100 for -- which makes the thing still odd for odd's sake!

No, I don't really know the answer to this either. :?

I suppose you could use it for rolling character stats in an RPG which is percentile-dice based if you want to create characters who (1) aren't horrible, and (2) don't stretch the top of the scale at creation. (Games like RQ, Boot Hill, Top Sectet, etc, use percentile stats.) That way you might allow them to improve stats as the game progresses.

I suppose there could be some non-gaming use for such a die, as was illuminated for the extra-large 7-sided dice discussed elsewhere. But I can't think what it might be...

1 to 34...
1 to 34...
1 to 34...
...hmmm...
