Castle Whiterock after some in-depth reading (anecdotal)

My tabletop gaming is on hiatus :( , so I had time to finally start reading CW word for word in my spare time. Im not that far into it (Morrain Gazetteer and halfway through the red book, and all of 51.5 which I forgot I stuffed into the box :) ). I bought this knowing I would likely never get a chance to run it but like other DCCs, the first edition style of GG adventures really appeals to me. I did the same with DCC 35, though I havent had much time to really go in-depth with Aereth yet.

As I read further I found myself wiring together plots and subplots (like tying the Wizard apprentice Lyssa hook to 51.5 instead), taking notes on potential problems (like finding a way to level 7 too early), adding in small things, etc. Then it hit me. It was like prepping the adventure for play when my group is kind of dead at the moment (due to real life changes, some pretty big, some small). The boxed set got me to eyeball a few other DCCs that I bought including DCC #15 as a possible epilogue as it is semi-linked with a possible sub-quest hook.

The box pretty much carried me back to the heyday of my favorite 1st edition and Basic (Keep on the Borderlands) days, when I was younger and had alot more time for creativity. I cant think of a better compliment for this boxed set. I regret not looking so deep into this before I started my first Paizo AP way back. I love the Paizo stuff but I think Castle Whiterock really matches my style and that of my group in its current incarnation (one and a half new players :) ). I really need to get my tabletop gaming group back in gear, though it looks kind of bleak atm. When we do, I think im headed to Whiterock instead.

If anyone in the NYC area wants to get a CW campaign going, lemme know. :) Same for anyone on the internet for an online game, even PBP. Ive never been in an online game, but Ill try it.

To Adrian, Chris, Harley (51.5), and anyone else involved with Castle Whiterock.... just plain WoW!™ I really do miss the Goodman Games DCC line.

Sorry your group is inactive, but I'm glad that CW speaks to you. I've worked on a lot of projects, and that is by far what I am most proud of.

Hope you find some NYC players!

Castle Whiterock is REALLY fun! I am running it in C&C right now for my group.They have cleared the third level now, and are starting to uncover the threads of the Duegar Baron, and the slavers around the area. Also, with the undertaker in the town, I made him associated with a demon in addition to working for the slavers. Through this thread, they have found out about a Count from Morcaut and the local Count that is head of the freeman. I don't quite know where this thread is going yet, but it has them intrigued so far.

I believe in random treasure determination and in beefing up the undertaker encounter for 10 pc's I rolled a 50,000gp Crown. This for 2nd level characters (at the time). I kept the roll. I had to justify it somehow, so I came up with the idea that it is the Crown of the former King of the Warlands. What was it doing in the possession of a (now) known slaver, a dealer in necromancy and demology? What is this Count of Morcaut (Demon blooded nobles from the warlands) doing in Cillimar? Why is he cheeky with the Count Ismae?

I hope you get to run it! The possibilities of fun are exponential!

Looks like my gaming group is back on track (at least for the next 2 months but its looking good). They decided they want to try and finish a previous campaign (Paizo's Rise of the Runelords, my favorite AP btw).
The next new campaign I run (either at the end of RotRL or a TPK sooner) will be Whiterock for sure under Pathfinder rules.

Its good to be gaming again :D

Mine just came shrink-wrapped in the mail yesterday and I didn't get around to opening it yet. It's as heavy as I remember.

I appreciate your anecdotal commments. They get me thinking about how I can make use of this gigantic product! :shock:

Your welcome. It really is a fanatstic product and the best organized (GM friendly) boxed set ive ever seen. Im jealous of all the folks playing it or who have played it. :)

I am running an online version of this campaign.

I'm running it using the Pathfinder ruleset, but otherwise with some heavy nods toward old-school gaming.

To wit:
stats are 3d6 and keep em. Randomness in the dice for Real Men, none of this 4d6 drop lowest reroll ones mamby pamby "My stats are 15 on average" nonsense.

Four-man party. Magic-user, fighting-man, priest, and thief.

On which note, the Magic-user spot seems to be CURSED. It is theoretically occupied by 3 players at the moment:
The first player, Todd, got very excited about the game, proudly proclaimed he'd be an elven wizard, rolled up his stats... and we've never heard from him since. He doesn't even have a character sheet - just 6 ability scores! Presumed dead or elven.
The second player, Matt, was gunned down by heartless technology. First, he was unable to receive Google invites. Second, he was unable to make a Google account. Finally, when he managed to log in and post - the dice roller broke! Just for him! Two hours later, it came back online, but by then we'd lost him. It has worked perfectly since, so it is assumed the roller hates gingers.
The third player is a mysterious creature only known to exist on Facebook. She likes to think about what sort of a character she wants to make, but doesn't actually make one. Presumed fickle or indecisive.

So... if any of the above players were to post their character and begin play, they've got dibs on the seat, however, I suspect that will never happen. If you beat them to it, you can take it. Make a Google Wave account, read the instructions in your Wave inbox on how to use the format, and PM me your Wave account name.
