GOODMAN GAMES TO PUBLISH OFFICIALLY LICENSED ADVENTURE MODULE ADAPTATION OF “FRANK FRAZETTA’S DEATH DEALER: SHADOWS OF MIRAHAN”

Goodman Games is pleased to announce that it has signed an agreement with the creators of the hit Image comic book series Frank Frazetta’s Death Dealer to publish an adventure module adaptation entitled The Adventures of Frank Frazetta’s Death Dealer: Shadows of Mirahan. The adventure module will be published under the GSL license from Wizards of the Coast, utilizing the Dungeons & Dragons Fourth Edition mechanics. The full-color adventure module will feature cover art by Frank Frazetta as well as an alternate-cover edition by Nat Jones and Jay Fotos. It is scheduled for release in Spring 2009.

“Every fantasy fan knows Frank Frazetta’s work,” said Joseph Goodman, President of Goodman Games. “When I first saw Frank Frazetta’s Death Dealer on the stands last year, I had to pick it up. It is a powerful story that’s beautifully illustrated, and it translates perfectly to the action of a D&D game.”

“This is cool,” said Jay Fotos, co-creator of the series. “Being able to play along on what we created in the comic series is another way for fans to be more immersed in the Frazettaverse.”

“Frazatta’s works have never been equaled for their raw, visceral power,” said Harley Stroh, staff writer for Goodman Games and author of The Adventures of Frank Frazetta’s Death Dealer: Shadows of Mirahan. “Many have tried to tell the story behind his most iconic character, but they’ve always fallen short. Jones and Fotos were the first to succeed. The Shadows of Mirahan adventures make it possible for players to experience the world of the Death Dealer, and – in a small way – live into Frazetta’s powerful images. This is ‘sword and sorcery’ at its finest.”

Frank Frazetta’s Death Dealer was Image Comics’ #1 best-selling title in 2008, surpassing established brands to gain an instant fan base. Based on the Death Dealer character created by Frank Frazetta, and created by Jay Fotos, Nat Jones, and Joshua Ortega, the comic introduces a new world of shadowed mystery and dangerous adventures. Its success has led to several additional titles set in the same world of Mirahan. More information on the comic can be found at http://www.myspace.com/frazettacomics, as well as http://www.frankfrazetta.com .

Scheduled for release in Spring 2009, The Adventures of Frank Frazetta’s Death Dealer: Shadows of Mirahan takes the players through the first chapter of the Death Dealer saga, bringing them face to face with the demonic armies of Mirahan as they race to save an empire.

Retailers will be able to order The Adventures of Frank Frazetta’s Death Dealer: Shadows of Mirahan early next year under the Goodman Games listing as SKU code GMG5371.

Goodman Games is a publisher of role playing games, adventures, and accessories that celebrates its sixth anniversary this year. It is best known for its Dungeon Crawl Classics line of adventure modules, the longest-lived and most popular d20 product on the market. For more information, visit http://www.goodman-games.com.

Am I right in assuming this will be a 1st level module? Or does it say and I missed it somewhere?

Red,

The first one is for character levels 4-6. It comes with pregens (characters out of the comics) but also provides instructions for both setting the adventure in your home campaign world, and for importing your own characters to Iparsia.

I haven't been this excited about a release in a long, long time. (Heh. Which, in Harley time, means "since mid-August"). It is going to be a great adventure.

I remember getting the first novel in this series given to me in high school. I read it and really enjoyed the story, but after 15 years I don't remember much of it. What really stayed with me was the cover art. That picture has always remained stuck in my mind. I'm going to dig around and find that book to reread it. So far this is the first 4th edition product I would consider buying. I can't wait to see a preview.

Yesterday I received the book in the mail, and I have been reading it all day. I must say: BRILLIANT WORK! I do not even play 4e (I had the 4e books and sold them), but this one makes me want to run a 4e game again. I might pick up the game again

I like the layout, and how stat blocks are not repeated too many times (one thing that put me off the new edition, at least in the WotC adventure modules), though 3 or 4 pages could have been saved. But this is nitpicking :)

I also like how the whole module only uses the PHB, though the pregen druid is a bit out of place IMO. Perhaps I will change the character with a fey pact warlock.

I also have some questions:
1- Is there a background for the pregens? Something which ties them to Iparsia (e.g. what's their culture)? As they stand, they are just a bunch of numbers, quite in contrast with all the rest.

************ SPOILERS WARNING!!! ************

2- I cannot understand where the refugees are supposed to go. Do they pass through the keep before the PCs get there?

Rabin,

I'm sorry I missed your post. I've been at Genghis Con, Denver, running games over the weekend.

First, thank you for the kind words. I'm glad you're enjoying DD. I'll ask around --- maybe there is someone willing to do a 3.5 conversion so that we don't force you back into 4e.

Re: Druid
In the Image comic, druids play a key role in saving the world against Mirahan. Dreovid actually joins the party, and aids them as best he can. The druid was a nod that direction. That said, I can certainly see how the druid stands out in the otherwise martial group.

Pre-gen Background[/d]
D'oh! That would have been great to include. But if you pick up the comics from Image, it will tell you all about them.

What about the PDF?
Just inside the cover page, you should have a black text box that instructs you how to download the free, full-color pdf. And let me tell you, it is *gorgeous.* The color art is amazing.

What about the Fleeing Peasants?
This is writer error. They all make it through the ruins before the PCs get there, but are moving too slow to escape the Shadow Horde unless the PCs manage to delay the army.

Hope this helps. Thanks for picking up DD!

Hi Harley,
thank you for the answer! I would avoid 4e if at all possible, and I am considering converting the whole to D&D 3.0, or Classic/Advanced D&D or even the new Dragon Age rpg which has some interesting dynamics which remind me of 4e though it's not as dependent on a map.

I am not a comics fan (in fact, I never heard of Death Dealer before finding it out here though I am intrigued by sword & sorcery and dark fantasy). Is there a single graphic-novel or something like that, i.e. which is self-contained?

RE: the pdf...I asked because there is no pdf on rpgnow nor drivethrurpg. :?

I also noted that the Skill Challenges still conform to the buggy version before the WotC errata. Would you still maintain the same Complexity if you had to revise them?

Finally...are all the PCs supposed to be from Oro?

Thanks again,
Antonio

Antonio,

Thank you for the post. The complete DD comic collection can be found in hardback from a number of fine retailers. It is fully self-contained and is an excellent resource for the game. (Not that you need it to run DD ... most of our world information was created with the blessing of the authors, but can't be found in the comics.)

Re: PDF. I alerted Joseph and hope to have this resolved shortly. We'll post something once it's live. Thank you for your patience!

Re: Good eyes on the skills challenges. I think, ultimately, that this needs to be tailored to your group. If the PCs are thoughtlessly bumbling through the woods or swamp, there needs to be consequences. Mirahan does not suffer fools.

Re: Are the pre-gens all from Oro? No. I'm in Austin until the end of the week, but I'll be able to get home to office and review the story bible to confirm origins. I'd hate to post something before then and have it be wrong.

Again, many thanks for taking a look at Death Dealer. I've run it several times in 4e, as well as BECMI and finally Warhammer 3e. I hope it serves you well in 3.x.

Hey thanks! I got the pdf. Gorgeous :D
I may look into the hardback (for which I just saw there is an ad in the DD book  ) if it's self-contained.

RE: other systems...wow! Care to share some ideas for adapting to BECMI?

I was thinking all humans (obviously), for the different cultures just put a minimum score requirement (e.g. Egyptians min Int 9, Vikavians min Str 9 etc.)
As characters to use in the game, probably 9th-12th level PCs: a druid, a thief, at least one fighter/knight with access to fighter combat options.
For the monsters...still thinking about it.

Thanks,
Antonio

Very nice job Harley. As everyone knows, I don't like anything and I would say this is top 3 4e products from anyone.
