Appendix: MUSIC

*This topic split off from beatniktom's thread about a gameday.*

What music do you like to listen to while playing or to put you in the mood to play a Fantasy RPG such as Dungeon Crawl Classics? Post your favorites here. I'm always looking for new metal.

Some bands that I often load up as background music when I GM:

The Sword - epic almost psychedelic metal. Very much influenced by Black Sabbath

Summoning - melodic, vast, dreary metal. several Tolkien themed albums

Bathory - viking metal. grand and sweeping sagas

3 Inches of Blood - This band is pure win. Listen. Songs about orcs, flaming axes, mighty deeds done and souls lost to temptation.

Skeletonwitch - Doesn't the name tell you everything you need to know?

Blood Tsunami - Fast. Lots of great guitar action

System of a Down, Rammstein & Opeth are cool for combat.

I use atmospheric film soundtracks for creating creepy moods. Bram Stoker's Dracula, The Ninth Gate, Event Horizon & Last of the Mohicans to name a few"

The soundtrack to Apocalypto is really good for creepy expeditions into dark forests or other natural settings.

My favorite Appendix N type song of the century (so far) is Turisas' Miklagard Overture.

It's 8 minutes long, but well worth listening through to the end.

A very close runner up is Therion's Three Ships of Berik.

(The song names are links.)

My during the day Prep music is either Death.FM, or when they're down, some other Doom/Death metal station to pump me up, and fill my head with gore.

During play, it's http://somafm.com/doomed/ (more ambient and spooky.)

Awesome suggestions! I have several RPG Spotify playlists based on Combat, Explore, Temple etc but they were not really working for us. When you're gaming until 2-3am you need a little something more than Baldur's Gate or Conan soundtracks.

Lately I've been playing Vektor and that's worked out well, I'll check out the rest of these. Traditionally I'm not much of a metal fan but it's really growing on me as I figure out the various sub-genres. I guess Vektor is "Thrash Metal"?

I saw GypsyHawk open for The Sword a few months ago. That was as great introduction to that band.
