Best of Dumpster Diving

Post by Arek »

Okay, so I'm pretty good at finding stuff online. I've got my resources, so I'll slap them up here, for the benefit of the Goodman Games board-goers, and include some samples...

First, one of my favorites, Planewalker.com.

This site has quite a bit. Templates, races, and, man, do they have equipment!

http://www.planewalker.com/snail/equipment.php

Here's some samples...
Hell's Chains (Kyton Bracers)
These bracers appears to be made up of barbed chains that wrap around the forearms, with several chains dangling a short way and ending in a hook or blade.
These chains were taken from slain kytons, and the inherent magic of those creatures used to enchant the bracers with their qualities.

The wearer has mental control over the chains, and can order them to extend up to 15 feet long and attack in place of his normal attacks.

This gives him two attacks at his base attack bonus, dealing damage of d8+3 with each hit (they count as +2 weapons for hitting creatures with damage reduction).

The user can also animate the extended chains to do other things, such as manipulate objects - he could pick up a cup and bring it to his hand with a chain for instance, although he can only use one chain from each bracer at a time for this sort of action.

The hooked chains can also aid in climbing by acting like grapnels and digging into the surface being climbed, giving a +5 circumstance check to any Climb skills being made while wearing these bracers.

Type Wonderous Item, Magical
Market Value: 12,000 gp's
Craft Level: 9th
Craft Prerequisites:
Creation Cost: 6,000 gp's, 480 XP
Weight :1 lb
And, its companion piece...
Cape of Chains
The cape of chains is a cape made literally out of chains. The chains are flat, finely constructed, bladed and up to 12 feet long, as the cloak resizes itself so that it never touches the ground.
The chains on the cape can be commanded to attack a target up to twice per round as a free action. The chains enjoy the wearer's BAB and number of attacks. They cause 2d4+4 damage on a successful hit. The chains can attack up to 25 times per refresh, and the cloak makes up to 4 attacks of opportunity per round at the wearer's will. The chains can perform civilian actions (such as wrapping around a bottle of wine and bringing it to the wielder) without spending themselves.
Also, once per day the cape can form into a pair of metal wings and allow the wearer to fly as the spell at a cost of 1 chain spent/minute. The chains cannot be used to attack while in "Flight" mode.
The cloak can form itself into a suit of mithril chainmail, but cannot be used to attack while in this form. The suit provides an +6 AC bonus while in this form, as well as a -4 Check penalty and 50% spell fail. The cloak consumes one chain for each ten minutes that it spends in armour form (rounding up).
Making the cloak assume either flight or armor mode is a standard action, and provokes an attack of opportunity. Switching from any mode to normal is a free action.
The cape itself is made of 25 chains made of Mithral, and each chain "spends" itself when used in combat, or as given above for flying or armour modes. When all the chains are "spent" the mantle from which the chains arehung begins to emit a small amount of discomforting heat. At this point the cloak must soak in moonlight for a peroid of 2 hours in order to refresh itself. If exposed for shorter periods, then one chain is recharged for each 15 minutes that the cloak is exposed to moonlight.

Constructing the chains requires a metalsmithing check (DC25) and 9000Gp worth of mithral. Each failed attempt ruins half the mithral and the lost amount must be replaced(4500Gp worth of mithral) in order to resume construction.

Constructing the mantle upon which the chains rest requires 1000gp worth of Darkwood and a sucessful woodworking check (DC15). Again, failure results in half the material being ruined.

Constucting the blades for the chains requires 5000gp worth of Adamantine and a successful weaponsmithing check (DC 20). Again, failure results in ruining half the material. T
he cape can them be assembled almost without effort.
Market Price: 60000Gp,
CasterLevel: 12
Prerequisites: Craft Wonderous Item, Telekeinesis, fly.
And, a fun bit...
Chocolate (Blessed Candy)
This piece of delicious milk chocolate has had its creamy, caramel centre blessed by a powerful priest of an unnamed power of good. Eating it will confer this blessing upon the devourer, in the form of a Bless spell. Consuming the chocolate is a partial action that does not provoke an attack of opportunity.
Type Wonderous Item, Magical
Market Value: 150 gp's
Craft Level: 3rd
Craft Prerequisites:
Creation Cost: 75 gp's, 6 XP
Weight :Negligible
Most of cool stuff is found under the Creature Codex and the Snail Outfitters links on the bar on the side. The CC should be self-explanatory, but the Outfitters has equipment, magic items, and artficacts under Apparatus and Equipment, and spells under Travel Knowledge.

Next up...

Good, if random resource...

Random Dungeon generator, random treasure generator, several other things...

My favorite is the fractal world generator. Hours of fun experimenting with continental drift...

The Gaming Den

http://bb.bbboy.net/thegamingden

This board is pretty interesting.

The most obvious things on it are Frank and K's tomes in the In My Humble Opinion board, but the other boards boast some really interesting stuff.

Of course, one of the articles of faith on the board is that DnD could really be designed better.

But, still, if you ever want to dumpster-dive for some fun feats or rules for an experimental game, this is one of the places you have to explore, because there's an amazing amount of material on these boards.

The bulk of it on IMHO and It's My Own Invention.

And, yes, I have an account on there, too.
