Same place, new name

I noticed that the "Art, Artists & Comic Books" section of the boards got blasted by SPAM much more than any other and wondered if the title somehow attracted SPAM bots. So I changed the name to see if it makes a difference.

Still the same place. Continue to discuss Art, Artists, and Comic Books here. 8)

As a FYI, it's worked but not as much as I had hoped. In the last day or so instead of 20+ SPAM messages I've been deleting 8-10 from this section. I'm not sure that's even a large enough data sample from which to draw a conclusion. Maybe the SPAM dudes are on holiday, or something. :P

There definitely seems to be some attraction of the word "art" to spam posts. Good thinking. Maybe we can try out other forum names like "Visual Hieroglyphs" and see if that stops the spam. :)

Yeah, so far the name change hasn't helped much. I'm still flushing this section a few times per day.

"Art" apparently attracts SPAM like moths to a flame... :P

I hate spam.

This AM I killed forty spam threads. I think that this is a one-time record for me. (I killed 24 yesterday.) In addition, there were another 6 posts imbedded in other threads.

It's a good thing that the boards are a little quiet at the moment. Six weeks ago we had so many new members posting daily that I had to take a lot of time seperating the good from the bad. Now there are hardly any newbies and most of the spam is easy to spot and flush.

Just me griping. Carry on. :P

Perhaps you should rename the forum, "All things A-R-T related"?

 I'll give that a try and see if it helps. I killed another 40+ threads today, almost all in the A-R-T section.

It also occured to me that "comics" was used in the description of the place, and maybe that was the giganto red bulls-eye attracting SPAM.

So I did the old edit thingie. Fingers crossed again. 8)

Too early to tell, but after 2 days of 45+ threads to purge in the AM, I changed the name and details of this area and only had to kill 14 today. :P

Wow. 67 SPAM threads, some in A-R-T and the rest in General. One actually legit post to approve.

If it wasn't for that one guy, I'd be tempted to look for a way to lock down new sign-ups to the boards. :(

Wasn't software updating mentioned? I'd swear I read it somewhere, but I don't see it in this thread.

I suppose that button pressing would have to wait until after the RPG has gone to press, since it is more pressing.

I'd purge everyone who has not posted, and spam posts don't count, and have been on the forum board rolls for more than four months.

That's a good point. (Actually, if they post SPAM that gets deleted, their post count goes back to zero. Only approved posts count so it should be easy to identify posters with zero posts. The question is how easy it is to find them in the Moderator screens....)
