Anyone have cool Gen Con stories?

Post by Luke Johnson »

Hi, guys!

From fellow freelancer Robin Laws:
Atlas Games is working, in conjunction with Peter Adkison and Gen
Con LLC, on a book to celebrate the upcoming 40th
anniversary of Gen Con, for release at next year's show.
It'll be a glossy coffee table history of the show,
with an emphasis on stories and anecdotes. Although intended
as a celebration of the show and 40 years of gaming, we want
to make sure that it's a fun, accessible book, not just a dry,
cautious corporate puff piece. I'm lead writer, Randy Porter is
serving as researcher, and Michelle Nephew is handling editing,
layout and photo clearance.

I'm currently in the early stages of reaching out to
potential interview subjects. I'm planning on using
an oral history format, using telephone interviews to
allow folks to share their memories and anecdotes in
oral history format.

If you have a great Gen Con story (or stories) to tell,
please get in touch with me so I can arrange to talk to
you by phone and record your voice to an audio file for
transcription.

If you can think of someone else who has a great Gen
Con story, or was integral to the show's history, I'd
be very grateful if you could point me their way.

Although industry types will be the easiest to track down,
we want to focus at least as much on what Gen Con has
meant to its audience. So if you know regular gamers who
have tales that need to be told, their contact info is
desperately required, too. (We'll also be setting up a web
site to trawl for interview subjects and photos, but
the wider the net, the better.) Do you know the couple
who got married at Gen Con? Somebody who went
into labor on the show floor and gave birth to a Gen Con
baby? An unsung volunteer? A perennial tournament
winner? Survivors of epic travel nightmares? Please
forward with abandon.
