D&D Experience Wrap Up

Post by Harley Stroh »

This was an awesome convention, and our first DDXP participating as vendors.

The first highlight was the chance to preview some of the 4E adventures we’ve been working on the last few months. We ran excerpts from some of our upcoming releases, including In Search of Adventure and Death Dealer. My personal highlight was the players’ reactions when I dumped the 100 count bag-o-zombies onto the battle map, alerting all the players to the fact that the armies of Mirahan had arrived.

Slaughter ensued.

We lost the good dwarf Frezian when a 30-foot high demon pitched him over a cliff onto the rocks several hundred feet below. The heroes persevered (after a lot of shifting away from the cliff edge), and the published version of the Death Dealer map will mark the stalwart dwarf’s sacrifice with a cliff face christened “Frezian’s Leap.”

Another highlight was seeing all the new 4E products. Mists of Madness (the return of the $2 module!), the first installment in the Heroes’ Handbook line, and the exciting Thrones of Punjar. We gave away a lot of free copies of Character Codex and the DM Campaign Record and it was great to see the record sheets immediately put to use in the Living Forgotten Realms games.

We had the chance to hang out with Ed Healy of War Pig Radio fame, record some interviews and the first of the Goodman Games “info-mercials.” Mike Mearls took time away from Wizards to sit down with us over lunch. Discussion ranged from 4E design choices, to old-school adventures. (Astute DCC fans will note the thematic threads between Mike’s DCC – The Lost Vault of Tsathzar Rho – and world components in 4E.)

And since most the Goodman regulars (irregulars?) are scattered across the States, cons are great opportunities for board meetings. We hashed out some of the 2009 releases and came up with some great ideas headed into 2010.

But the best part of any con is always getting to meet other gamers. These adventures are meaningless without you to play them, and it always helps us as writers to hear what you like, don’t like or might be looking for. Thank you to all the folks that took time away from their RPGA games to stop by the booth, and special thanks to those that set aside time in their weekend to play in our games. It was great to make some new friends and put faces to names. We hope to see you again at Gen Con. Finally, thanks to Dave C. and all the other hard working folks that made DDXP such a success.

For those that didn’t have the chance to make it to DDXP, I hope you get a chance to make it to Dundracon, Genghis Con, or any of the other conventions we have coming up. Drop in, pick up any freebies we might be giving away, and play in some games.

They’re sure to be good times, just stay away from Frezian’s Leap.
