What do you think the forum ranks should be?

Post by goodmangames »

Since the dawn of time, or at least Goodman Games, the forum ranks here have been based on dinosaurs:

Tyrant Master (Administrator)
Compsognathus (Newbie) 1-2 posts
Oviraptor (Jr. Member) 3-49 posts
Velociraptor (Member) 50-299 posts
T-Rex (Sr. Member) 300-599 posts
Tyrant King (Posting Freak) 600+ posts

Seeing as how most people now know Goodman Games for something other than Broncosaurus Rex, perhaps it's time these ranks changed. Do you guys have any suggestions? Wizardly ranks seem one obvious choice (apprentice through to arch-mage), or perhaps some of the old 1E character ranks... but I am open to suggestions!

Going with the suggested "DCC" theme ... I shamelessly ripped these off of the old 1st-edition AD&D 'level titles' for the fighter class.

Lord (Administrator)

Swordsman (Jr. Member) 3-49 posts
Swashbuckler (Member) 50-299 posts
Myrmidon (Sr. Member) 300-599 posts
Champion (Posting Freak) 600+ posts

Or, if you like wizards -

Archmage (Administrator)
Prestidigitator (Newbie) 1-2 posts
Conjurer (Jr. Member) 3-49 posts
Magician (Member) 50-299 posts
Enchanter (Sr. Member) 300-599 posts
Mage (Posting Freak) 600+ posts

Wizards? You'll make Jengenritz cry...

How about the names of DCC modules? Start with 0th level (Legends are Made or Halls of the Minotaur) and work your way up. ;)

Of course, I'd be just as happy with any nostalgic 1E character ranks as well.

Wizards? You'll make Jengenritz cry...
THANK YOU!

Why not skulker, robber, footpad, heart of larceny, asparagus, and Guildmaster?

I say stay with the dinosaur theme. It's unique.

I'd add lots of levels, similar to Necromancer's forums.

Because we love you, big guy ... and because you know they are thieves, and not rogues ...

Master Thief (Administrator)
Footpad (Newbie) 1-2 posts
Cutpurse (Jr. Member) 3-49 posts
Robber (Member) 50-299 posts
Burglar (Sr. Member) 300-599 posts
Thief (Posting Freak) 600+ posts

And it turns out a 1st-edition thief that's 8th level is a "Magsman".

Hmm.

I really like the eccentricity of the Dino-ranks, but I do agree with the "faster leveling" concept. Who wants to be a newbie for long? When you're first level the thing you want most is to be second level! :)

As for a new theme....

The 1st Ed. level ranks seem a fun, obvious choice, and I think the obvious factor has me resisting them....

I'll give it a think and get back if inspiration strikes.

I still think it would be cool if it had a DCC theme.

Maybe a list of evil bad guys from the DCC line?

You can work your way up to Chalychia the Devil Lich!

Okay, how about party roles? (Forgive me if that sounds too 4e :P ).

Things like, mapper, delver, lantern bearer, henchman, trapfinder, swordsman, magic-user, knight, etc. (If a member has published something with the company, they could get 'hireling' added on to their title.)

It fits the "old school" theme generally, and thereby the DCC's, but doesn't exclude other GG goodness...

Just making that list has reconjured the feel of playing back in the late 70's, back when we mapped on graph paper based on what the DM described, we had henchmen and hirelings, were magic-users not wizards or sorcerers.... 8)

"What do you think, Sirs?"

These are some good ideas. GnomeBoy, I'm leaning toward your party role idea. But let's leave the polls open for a while longer, to make sure we get all the best ideas. Any other suggestions?

To go with the DCC theme, let's focus on ... what else? Violent death!

Killed by kobolds
Mangled by minotaur
Pulverized in pit trap
Licked by illithids
Charbroiled by black dragon

Awesome idea! I'm going to put all my votes into this one.

I want a level in Toth Ror, Tsathzar Rho and Sezrekan!

Since I really like BRONCOSAURUS REX and would love to see a revision of it (*hint, hint*) I'd stick to the unique system as is.

Otherwise I would stick to GnomeBoy's idea. It's sweet!

What about basing them after the levels/ranks that Troll Lord Games use in their C&C Society?? Squire, Knight, Lord, Baron, Duke, etc ...

No offense, but since this isn't Troll Lord Games, I'd think we'd want something uniquely Goodman-esque.

I'm starting to lean in this direction, too. Toth-Ror, Tsathzar Rho,
Sezrekan, Chalychia... and of course Torgo the Eye Gouger (one of my personal favorite DCC characters)... perhaps the Castellan, as well? Any other candidates?

Surely, you're not forgetting Kyleth...!

While I still like my original idea since they are titles for titles, DDC Villains for titles are cool, too. Do they get updated/expanded as new, as-memorable villains come along? And will there be DDC numbers in parentheses after the name so you know where they came from? (I'm one of those rare forum members who don't collect every single module [at least not yet - 12 and building].)

Benthosruthsa rocks! And yes, the Castellan should be on any list like that. He's earned iconic DCC status, right along with Chalychia and Tsathzar Rho.

It is done! We can't all be Chalychia, so I "generified" the names into titles, like this:

Eye gouger (kobold warrior) - 1 post
Rat king - 3 posts
Villainous minotaur - 15 posts
Half-dragon ettin - 50 posts
Witch queen - 100 posts
Devil lich - 200 posts
Arch mage - 300 posts
Old red dragon ghost - 500 posts

So what did everyone end up as?

Now its posting time - I want to be a Devil Lich!

:D Cool! :D I'm a Half-Dragon Ettin! :D I haven't played, run, read or own that module (yet) but that figure rocks! :D

Genericafying them was a good idea.

Oooo -- are we gonna have icons available of the respective baddies to optionally use for our forum avatars?
