A quick con report on Winter's Dark II

Post by goodmangames »

This weekend I went up to Lake Geneva for Winter's Dark II, an event put on by the Trolls (see http://www.trolllord.com/newsite/events ... ark08.html ). A lot of folks were there, including Jim Ward and Frank Mentzer, and Steve and I had a chance to stop by Gary's house for dinner. I thought I'd post a couple pictures for those of you who couldn't make it. It's a fun, low-key con, with a bigger version in the summer, and a great place to visit if you're looking to play some games.

(These were taken on my cell phone so they're a little fuzzy...)

John Seibel and Steve at the booth... See the dice cubes in the lower left? I think this was around the time we were laughing about a defective die -- a customer found out that the d6 he'd just bought had no 1 or 6. The faces had 2, 3, 3, 4, 4, 5... I've never seen anything like it before. He'd been using the die in a game and wondering why his rolls were so low...

It's a cool con that's cozy enough to have a sheet cake sitting out for folks to help themselves to a slice!

And, erm, woulddn't that defective die still be exactly within average for a d6?

Awesome. Sounds like a tremendous time. I'll have to see if I can make my way up there one of these years ...

I'd really like to meet Frank Mentzer. I wound up corrosponding with him many years ago when I was first attempting to break into freelance writing. He provided me with a bunch of encouragement and good advice.

I'd love the opportunity to thank him for that - in person - someday.

I really, really, really want to go! More than I want to go back to GenCon. Maybe next year.

I'm saving my ducats for this one next year. It looks like so much fun.

A friend and I did a cross country pilgrimage to Lake Geneva a few years back. We found the local gaming store and I bought a gray d20. I discovered Goodman Games shortly after.

It's probably coincidence, but I still keep that d20 around, just in case. :)
