Re: Tricking players knowledge in favour of characters knowl
Or the one that looks like the ceiling? Piercer Wasn't it the "Lurker" or "Lurker Above" or something like that? Piercer was a stalactite, but the Lurker just looked like, well... a ceiling. Yes, there is also the Lurker Above, a ceiling clinging manta ray. I went with the pierc...

Re: Tricking players knowledge in favour of characters knowl
Of course, TSR was also known for coming up with absurd monsters just to annoy players. Well, not exactly. It wasn't a TSR mandate. Most of these monsters were invented in Dragon magazine/Strategic Review and Gary just incorporated them into the Monster Manual. The rust monster has a propeller on i...

Re: Just had a wacky idea about "Luck"
You are proposing replacing the luck modifier with what most RPGs call action points. I think that idea floated around before.

The best thing you can do once you discover this DMing secret is go whole hog with it. Nothing is what is seems to be. The fun part is once you get it out of your system and you send a "normal" owlbear against the party it will scare them. "Does it have deadray eyebeams?" "M...

Re: One thing I would like to see...
As a side note, Enworld has a long thread where we discuss the presentation of Tomb of Horrors. It is a room by room dissection of the module. The OP wanted to know why it was considered a great module and we point out that great is relative. Since ToH was initially written for a 1975 con. It's wort...

Re: One thing I would like to see...
The modules I'm writing now is a series very much a series of modules that can be enjoyed standalone or as a longer campaign arc (similar to Giants/Drow series) I suppose the bad part is due to my Real Job I'm writing them about 1 per year, but I'm hoping to increase my productivity to about 1 ever...

Re: Alternate EXP Award Method
That would be amusing. 3E's xp chart (where you have 13.33 encounters per level) would be something like:
1 0
2 13
3 26
4 40
5 53
6 66
7 80
etc
Don't even call them XP at that point. Just call it meaningful encounters per level. Then you have to argue with the player counting encounters of course.

Actually, ERB's Pellucidar series (starting with At The Earth's Core) I find more interesting than Mars. The "time is relative" conceit makes it interesting. But Mars and Venus are certainly fun stories and ERB was a master at creating interesting new worlds.

Treat them as monsters. Only include stats for things that matter.

Re: Some thoughts about racial abilites
This has been discussed before. The game is inspired by Appendix N, but with an eye toward drawing in D&D players. The whole cleric class has been a point of contention here. Customers of Goodman Games existing products are the target of the game and as such the game does not stray from D&D'...

Re: Class & Racial Class
The players need to look at it not as though they are making a Dwarf Warrior, a Halfling Warrior or an Elf Wizard. That's what I tell my players. Eventually they can choose other classes for those races but right now those are the only choices. Oh and the demi-human versions of those classes are di...

Re: Loot=XP
Why, when adventure designers of the past never had this problem? Adventures in the past have always been set as, "For character levels 1-3" or "For character levels 5-8" etc. There is no good/logical reason for restricting all classes to a single level of advancement, except fo...

I absolutely believe that, all other things being equal, some skill-sets are harder than others. Now explain how killing an orc is a measurably greater improvement to the skill set of thief than it is to the skill set of a fighter (assuming AD&D style xp charts 15/1250 is greater than 15/2000)....

Re: Alternative to "3d6, in order"
I'd rather not have DCC be a game solely focused on making sure you get a +2 bonus in a primary ability score. And I'd also rather have an option that carries the blessing of Joseph and Harley than have to do a forum search for a trillion options whose side effects on play aren't apparent until the...

But in doing so, you break the balance between classes. Magic-users have to gain more XP due to the power they wield, thieves level faster than other classes. Can you show me a quote from Gygax saying that the xp tables in AD&D were anything but pulled from some unnamed nether region? Balance? ...

Re: Loot=XP
I guess I've just always been turned off by the idea that the story was what the players were playing through, as opposed to being the outcome of what the players do. Advancing at DM whim just feels too similar to that mindset. Story is a loaded word in these kinds of discussion. Don't think of it ...

Re: 3d6, in order
HERE'S ANTHER TWIST: Have your characters roll 3d6 to generate a set of stats and arrange them in the order they like. Have then write down the values of each die instead of just the total number. (This gives a set of random base numbers similar to your original suggestion.) Then, once the numbers ...

Re: Loot=XP
In the 4th Ed campaign I run, I use the "you level up when the DM says you level up" method. While it keeps character advancement on track with the story, the distance (for want of a better word) between the characters' actions and the level advancement reward makes it, in my opinion, an ...
