You do realize that if the game starts at level 0 and goes up to level 10 then the game really has 11 levels.

Re: [Design Question] DCC RPG and 10 Levels
Joe, I think a lot of people are going to be very, very pleased to read this post. I know I am. :D And honestly, I think things like building keeps and facing off against patrons is perfect supplementary material... In my 30 years of playing D&D (damn, i'm getting old), I've never once played o...

Re: Have your attitudes towards DCC RPG changed since Jan. 3
I'm sort of curious as to what level is a "minimun" in order to have folks be interested in the DCC rpg. Would it have to go up to 8th level instead of 5th? Would it need to go to 10th? What's the "magic number" for this? :? I'm not sure that numbers really mean anything. It's t...

Re: Have your attitudes towards DCC RPG changed since Jan. 3
Personally I have no problem with the level range as I'm more attuned to Traveller (no levels), Trail of Cthulhu (no levels) and Call of Cthulhu (slow progression). In those games it's about roleplaying not leveling up like some sort of computer game. It's all about expectations. I love Traveller a...

Re: Have your attitudes towards DCC RPG changed since Jan. 3
And we haven't had any solid explanation for why that's so... other than "I think it will work better this way". Why? I'm guessing that the spell tables and crit tables take up a whole lot more space than they first expected and now they need to chop the game down to make it fit into the ...

Re: Have your attitudes towards DCC RPG changed since Jan. 3
As sort of a pulse on my own anticipation, I'll necro this thread. My attitude towards DCC has tanked since the levels thing. I'm kind of feeling the same way since the 5 levels comment myself. That combined with having to buy a bunch of weird dice will make selling this to my group awfully tough t...

Re: [Design Question] DCC RPG and 10 Levels
Yep, I agree completely. Either the game has sufficient depth in the core rulebook or I'm not going to buy it. I don't want to have to invest in another shelf of rpg books to run a decent campaign.smathis wrote:I want this to be my go-to fantasy rpg. Not Hackmaster Lite.

Re: [Design Question] DCC RPG and 10 Levels
I don't like the idea of the core only supporting levels 1-5. It would feel like an incomplete game, just like HackMaster Basic does. By all means, use additional books to bring in rules for building castles, mass warfare, etc, but the core rulebook should be all I need to run a game if I don't want...

Re: [Design Question] DCC RPG and 10 Levels
The easiest way to turn down the lethality dial in any version of D&D is to start the pc's at a higher level. I've often thought that 1st level characters (nevermind 0 level ones) were underpowered. I mean, given the same equipment, a measly 4' tall goblin is as tough as the average human. If th...

Re: [Design Question] DCC RPG and 10 Levels
I disagree with you on this. There are enough elements of the game that someone who is familiar with d20 DnD or d20 C&C will have very little problem picking up the game. Except that there are no feats, no skills (not in d20 sense anyway), bonuses are added by additional dice - not a constant n...

I agree with you in theory, but it seems like it would be a royal PITA to dm a game where I had to look up the results of every, single spell by myself.

Re: Alignment & Clerics
How about instead of an Alignment, characters have a Motivation. It could be stuff like- get rich, revenge, power, protect the weak, defend the realm, etc. You would pick one and that would be your reason for adventuring and perhaps you get bonus xp for achieving goals that match it.
