New Spells?

I'm interested in hearing about what others have done as far as creating new spells for your campaigns. I am currently working on creating a handful of new spells, but I am finding that I do not see many opportunities for new spells that do not overlap with existing spells. I am also having some dif...

Re: Effects of Stun?

The best I can find is the first mention of being stunned in the Crit tables says that the stunned creature falls to the bottom of the initiative order in the next round. I would probably reduce their AD by 1 step, too, but that's just me. One of the things that has become very clear to me after sev...

Re: Elves Live So Very Long, And Yet...

Yep, I understand completely and don't disagree with you, Skyscraper. Peter Jackson bought and paid for the right to use a couple of Tolkien's ideas in his creations. The movies are enjoyable, to a point (how many times can you watch someone fall 12 stories while swinging like Tarzan or Spiderman on...

Re: Elves Live So Very Long, And Yet...

I wouldn't worry too much about Tolkien's elves, Mr H. Peter Jackson is well on his way to utterly erasing everything Tolkien wrote and rewriting it completely different anyway, soon they will be unrecognizable except by us old people that still actually read books before we see the movie. I no long...

Re: The Case AGAINST Elf Spellburn

Why would he ever choose to be a wizard rather than an elf? Purely for roleplaying purposes. If you're playing with the 0-level and funnel rules, the player cannot choose to be an elf; she either is or is not one. Elves and other demihumans, in my experience, are rarely as optimized as the human cl...

Re: The Case AGAINST Elf Spellburn

I can't imagine that there has been anything official from GG indicating that Elves are not affected by Spellburn, but I've certainly been wrong before. In the end, I think it is a balance issue and has nothing to do with the literature. I can't imagine even the lowliest Noldor from the Silmarillion...

Some general comments: I design all my adventures and once you get the hang of it, it's not too hard. Don't worry about the possibility of making an encounter too hard - in DCC it's up to the players to figure that out on their own and then run away, or get creative. I have designed two funnels so f...

Re: Need rules for mass combat...using DCC characters

In the distant past I tried many times to come up with a way to mesh rpg characters into a mass combat system. I really wanted to incorporate large battles into my rpg games on occasion and it seemed like there should be something that would work smoothly. There are a lot of good miniature combat sy...

I would allow it, no doubt. I suppose if there were some point later on where it was abused in some way, I'd reconsider, but I see no reason not to adhere to the RAW in this case.

Case by case basis, but the one I allowed a non-spellcaster to use, he has to roll a d10 and suffers minor corruption if he rolls a 1.

Re: Unused Magic Items & Magic Item Shoppes

My characters do not all have the exact same alignment as the party's cleric, so they tend to donate any unwanted magic items to his church as a tithe for the healing he provides. The party's wizard has also used an item as a sacrifice to gain a +5 on a spell check. The party in my game hasn't thoug...

I bought a 3' x 5' white board at Office Max then used an exacto knife to cut in a 1" grid pattern. The dry erase ink settles into the fine grooves I cut to create the background grid pattern. It sounds like a lot of work, but it actually didn't take very long.

Re: Cleric-less Parties: How to keep them alive?

For a year or two now I have been running rpg's where I give the characters (2 x their level) + their Stamina (or Constitution) bonus hit points back for the first night's rest after taking damage. This represents replenishing the physical fatigue and psychological exhaustion associated with the day...

I would just tell him you're not into gratifying his sexual urges at the gaming table any more than you would be in the bedroom. Explain that part of being an adult is to know when to keep those thoughts to yourself.

Re: Awarding XP

I give xp's after each encounter, and have done so for as long as I remember, going back to the early 80's at least. I have always thought that the idea that a person has to train in order to assimilate something they've learned was rather artificial and almost always highly unrealistic. If my chara...

Re: Limits to Spell Burn?

Yes, excellent point Gameogre. When you look at things in the long run, Mighty Deeds do sound better. But when it comes to dramatically changing the outcome of an encounter, at low level I think they pale in comparison to most spell effects that a Wizard can achieve by spellburning 10 or 12 points a...

IMO, a spell result in the high 20's + is hardly comparable to a mighty deed.

Re: DCC protects against railroading … but can it do a sandb

As I've mentioned when this has been brought up previously, I balance Spellburn by increasing the chance of corruption proportionately for every point of spellburn used. I have found this to be a natural deterrent to the MSTR (Massive Spellburn Then Rest) tactic.

Re: ...The Save Is Made Against The Spell Check Result...

My house rule is that a natural 20 grants another roll with a +20 modifier.

I think there should always be the possibility of making a saving throw. Even a 0 level cook can get extraordinarily lucky in the face of nearly certain death.

Re: All good things must ecentually come to an end

Our campaigns always peter out over the summers, too. Most of us are older, with kids who are involved in sports which take up almost every minute of free time in the months of May, June and the early part of July. When I was a kid, most of us played sports, but it was for fun and the coaches didn't...

... I'm fairly new to DCC, so maybe I'm completely misreading the rules, but my understanding was that you are trying to roll under your luck score ... so if you burn luck to add points to your roll ins't that just a zero sum game? Yes you're right, it's pretty straightforward, really: as you burn ...

I like the idea of making a slipcase edition with extra rules/classes/spell/patrons. Anything but a slipcase with the just same rulebook having a different cover. Re: Luck score table question

I make them roll and keep track of it. I have put magic items into the game that work differently depending on the character's birth auger, and I have had a character express an interest in questing for the chance to get a bonus for his birth auger even though he started with no modifier.

Re: Ability Scores at 2, 1 and 0

I've only had this happen once so far and I increased the modifier by one point each, so 2 was -4, 1 was -5 and 0 would have been -6 if the character got there. I also ruled that if a physical ability score (STR, AGL, STM) is at 0 for more than a day, the character dies, and while at 0 the character...
