Re: Magic Shield
Spell effect doesnt specify only HP damage so I would go with that the spell is effective. In your first instance just change the extra effect to say, just before spell is completed.

Spell Checks as Save DCs
Fellow Judges, Is anyone else having issues with the Spell Check establishing the DC for the spell saves? For instance I have an Elf that is consistently rolling in the 20's for a spell check on Ropework making the save almost impossible to deflect. In many cases only a natural 20 will defeat it. An...

Re: Sailors on the Starless Sea Finale
There are a couple of options. My group had a two pronged approach. Strike Team Alpha had the cloaks from the pool room and attempted to walk up the ziggurat using the Chewbacca ploy of another character not truly being bound. If caught they were going to run full bent up the ramp and conduct a luck...

Which is why crits are modified for your luck. At any point if the result is dead, i would say there is no rollover of the body.

Re: Mercurial Magic - Who uses it?
In my game the players love it for good or ill and it requires little to no management on my part. Once they learn the spell I have them roll and tell them what the effect is then they run with it in fun and unique ways.

Re: Death in DCC -- advice plea.
The PHB talks about running two characters, Pg 77 "In higher-level play, when each player has no more than two characters, use individual initiative by character. Roll once for each character and apply all appropriate modifiers." I found it to be much better RPing wise when the players eac...

Re: Death in DCC -- advice plea.
I see two issues at work here. The death of a beloved PC and the time investment on getting a character up to par with the rest of the group. For the first issue part of the feel and structure of DCC is its lethality. This makes the game worth while and it makes the players think about what they are...

Player1: Wait, who are you taking as a Patron for your Wizard.
Player2: Hey don't worry about it! Its only going to have an effect on me....mostly.
Player: I just hit second Level! If the hirelings weren't all dead I would buy them a beer back in town. This is the greatest day ever!

Re: Barrowmaze conversion notes
I was working on converting barrowmaze using Ragboys stuff as a starting point. One session down and things are going good. I picked up AD&D Dungeoneer Survival Guide off of eBay for short money. I was giddy flipping through it thinking of what Ican do to the PCs. I love this game!

Judge: the specter reaches out and chokes Gemini for four points. Opposed STR check to break free.
Player: She takes the four points of damage, but she kinda likes it.
Player2: is that gonna be party knowledge?

Quotes from Around the Table
Player: we are gonna shake these guys down and see if they will pay for us to solve their problem. Judge: Dude, he's a Jarl surrounded by his Thegns. You guys are only first level. Player: no, you don't understand WE'RE FIRST LEVEL! Player: does any one in here look like they would be worth fighting...

Re: Wizard Power
I agree, a wizard isn't required to have a patron. However, as they advance and do more arcane feats I will have my magic users come to the attention of other powers as unaligned wizards. Some will be targeted as enemies, others tempted as allies. I have also been liberal with them finding patron bo...

Re: Law vrs Chaos
I think the alignment comes more into play when your talking about cosmic allegiance. Relics or magic items of laws and chaos, patron outlooks, etc. For day to day issues, do we put the prisoners to the sword type stuff I let the situation and the players decide.

Re: Wizard Power
Every time I have come out and said one class or another is overpowered someone else comes out with something that makes me say, WOW. I think that while some classes come out and shine no class lacks the ability to do that as well, only the conditions. The warriors Mighty Deeds ability is truly awes...

Re: Spell burn to regain spells
Well in my group we have tossed this reading of the rules around a little bit more. I do think that it can be interpreted that the spell caster has to expand the ability points each time as its worded. However, for the average spellcaster at low levels the chance of failing a spell cast is still pre...

I have appended the Adventure Conqueror King System description of alignments to my game to give them added clarity and focus. "Law: Lawful beings believe that civilization is worth fighting for. Despite its vices and villainies, civilization must be defended against those who would destroy it....

Re: Doom of Savage Kings in 15 minutes **** Spoilers****
The staff of magi defense has always been a mages prerogative. I think it makes the Mage a worthwhile class and makes them dangerous. A 20 stat spell burn and a natural20 roll go a long way in any game. First level in DCC is also unlike the same level in other games. It was an enjoyable event, after...

Re: Doom of Savage Kings in 15 minutes **** Spoilers****
Totally agree. Two fighters down, the party on the ropes and BAM! 1st level Wizard serves up victory on platter to end the adventure.
Game mechanic thoughts aside, it was a lot of fun and after playing for almost a year now we all still love the system.

Spell burn to regain spells
So I was reviewing the spell burn rules today. Pg108 "If a wizard expends a lost spell's level in ability score points, he can cast the spell as if he still had it." So does the wizard again regain the spell as if he had not lost it for the day or are you guys ruling that the wizard or elf...

Spell burn, as in this example case above, snatches defeat from victory and is dramatically appropriate.
I say let them burn away!

Re: Doom of Savage Kings in 15 minutes **** Spoilers****
So my group wrapped up the Doom of Savage Kings last night and one of my players was so excited posted a summary on his Facebook. I thought I would share it here: I made a post about our game last night on FB, and thought I'd share it with you guys. Sorry if I got any character names/details wrong. ...
