Re: DCC Beta Campaign test: Portland, OR

Exactly. I held my characters back. Maybe it was careful play. Thanks for the extensive write up. It is interesting to see different rules interpretations. I agree that there are a ton of characters, but that could change quickly. Overall, I really dug the problemsolving aspect of your dungeon. Ill ...

Re: DCC Beta Campaign test: Portland, OR

With some slightly cowardly play, three of four survived! I gotta say it is pretty neat living and dying by the dice roll. Very few modifiers, which is a relief after 4e (DMing D&D Encounters I'm watching 12yr old kids get held up adding d20+7+2+1 each round, which is good for them, but I digres...

Re: "Limiting" Corruption

Another idea, rather than slowing the Class die progression is to make the it a multiple rather than a plus 2. Spell Loss : if result of Class die < (spell level x2) This would slow down attempts by wizards to over reach their power. It also make 1st level wizards particularly vulnerable (zero chanc...

Re: "Limiting" Corruption

I would add this: Roll for Corruption if d20 result = 1 and Class Die < Spell Level +2
This limits Corruption when casting lower level spells.
The issue, however is that it makes magical fumbles very rare.

Also, I would advance the Class Die more slowly, perhaps every other level: d3,d3,d4,d4,d5

Re: Cleric Spells and "Class Die"

I dig the "Faith Die" success or failure swing, but I my instinct is to start the die much lower, say d3, d4, d5, d6 etc. But I guess this would be something to play test...

Re: Party composition & different roles

What about generating four 0-level characters and then leveling up the one you like the most based on all those rolls? (As if they all survived the funnel) Kinda time consuming but it might help to distinguish and randomize the new character while giving the player a bit of choice.

Playtesting in Portland: The Mists of Madness

I tried out the game yesterday with some friends and we had a stellar time! We usually play 4e D&D, but attendance was going to be spotty so I offered to run DCCRPG. Three players showed up. I handed them the four-character sheets and they started rolling dice, making do without the specialty di...

It would be great if Mr Otus got in touch his covers for those earlier hardpacks and modules are classics that really set a great tone for the game, I much prefer it to the current anime style Me and a friend were at Gen Con 2000 in Wisconsin when the 3e came out and we were asking some of the new a...

Erol Otus

I've been a fan of Erol Otus for a long time but don't know anything about him
I see he's doing covers for Goodman Games. Is he coming out of retirement? has he been in the gaming industry the whole time? What's his story?
