Re: The Original Appendix N (reposted)

EGG also talked about not liking LoTR too, but that's still on the list. I have heard that Halflings were included in D&D just to ride off some of the popularity of LotR. They were originally called Hobbits before J.R.R's estate got after TSR. This is correct. OD&D had balrogs and hobbits and ents ...

Re: Is our vision of Conan wrong?

We want Conan the brute. Both Fafhrd and Elric are more femmy than Conan, For some reason I like both of them better than Conan though. This considered, Cugel the clever is really the bigger brute. (Jack Vance/ Dying Earth , do I need to say this?) As far as I can remember Conan only throws women o...

Re: Elves

"Quest for it" may well be the soul of this game. This should be written on the title page of the next edition of the rulebook. I think one of the biggest shifts that I have seen in our group was first the realization that their characters were pretty mediocre at best as far as natural talents go, ...

Re: Introductions Thread - Join the Band!

I have been playing D&D since 1978 when I was introduced to it in middle school. I started with Holmes Basic and spent most of the '80s playing AD&D. I stopped playing D&D after 2e came out. I spend the next ten years or so playing GURPS. When 3e came out in 2000, I started playing D&D again. I don'...

That seems too high, especially at low levels. I'd be inclined to use Negative character level. If you want to be generous, add stamina bonus to the number.
That is a pretty good idea.

Re: Dice: generating "Zocchi results" using "normal" polyhed

I went out and bought a couple D30s today. Didn't notice any of the other dice used in this game (at the game store). IIRC, my son has a set of Game Science dice I may have to borrow. The push back against the "new" dice may or may no come from the group I play with. I won't know until I run a game ...

I played a Dwarf fighter (in AD&D) that lost a hand while adventuring, and had a prosthetic hand made to replace it. It worked until he was killed in the next adventure.

At the end of Gary Con IV, Dave Kenzer was giving away free copies of Hackmaster Basic. I've seen the new PHB, and it strikes me as overly complex and that is not what I want in a RPG.

Stayin' Alive!

How lethal is DDC as compared to other old-schoolish games?

The game look pretty lethal to me, and it seems right that it is. I am not arguing with that.

Just asking: as a player (or even a GM) how are your character(s) stayin' alive? (Or attempting to do it.)
