Welcome to Hurrican Bayou

Hurricane Bayou is just south of New Ordane, capitol town of the kingdom of Naris. Perched above the morass and rotting vegetation huddles a small village. Ruled by Sir Robert, the village of Lacroix clings with clutching fingers to life, eking out existence through fishing, hunting, working as guid...

Re: New forum for actual play of DCC RPG?

I was going to suggest this very thing, but then while looking at threads I started to wonder where the "gray area" fits in. For example, there is a thread on playtesting magic. Does it stay in Magic (since it's relevant to that section) or does it move to Actual Play since it was a playtest report...

Re: Scrap the XP table. One table to rule them all

To be honest, in my ongoing games I have leveled up characters via "judge fiat" so far -- not a lot of actual XP tracking -- "okay, that's three adventures at level 1 so now you're all level 2!" I consider the XP system to currently be in "philosophical mode," not even playtest mode yet. In additio...

Re: Vote to add the d50 in 2012 to the DCC RPG supplement

For initiative, I might use d20 or d16 for two-handed weapons with warriors using d24 or d20 and at 10th level warriors use d34 or two-handed d30. Harley mentioned needing a d50 once but he didn't give specifics.

Vote to add the d50 in 2012 to the DCC RPG supplement

Just saw the d50. This die should be added to the DCC RPG in the 2012 release I think. If you agree, please post +d50.

Re: Initiative and Two-Handed Weapons

Another option for warriors to cut out the math completely: Warriors roll d24 or d20 for two-handed weapons at 1st level. A 5th (or 10th whichever seems fair) level warrior rolls a d30 for initiative or a d24 (or d24+1 if needed) for a two-handed weapon.

Joseph, Thanks for your inside look at the business and gaming decisions behind the DCC RPG. A lot of your explanations set my mind at ease. Explaining your design and business strategy as well as listening to your customer/playtesters shows us a lot of respect. I appreciate it. Also, I actually alr...

New forum for actual play of DCC RPG?

I know that DCC has been playtested heavily at conventions but I'm not sure if any long-term, campaign games are running or not. I wondered if a new forum for DCC RPG actual play could be created. I think the forum would be useful for two reasons. One, we could see one group's experience with the be...

Re: changing the tone of DCC?

I like the general feel of the rules, but in a couple sections (Like rolling characteristics) it seemed silly. If a rule says Roll a D20 to hit. Why would I confuse things by saying, do not roll a d16 nor a d24, roll a d20 and only a d20. One d20 and not 3 d20s taking the best one nor rolling 2d20 ...

Re: dwarf fighter, elf wizard, halfling thief option

gets a +1 bonus to agility/stamina. Then you have to change the ability score chart to indicate what the bonuses are for 19. And arguably, the Elf should get an Int bonus, not Agility. 17 +2 +2 spells 6 18 +3 +2 spells 7 19 ?? ?? ??? A change would be either +1 to one score (Agi or Int) or if alrea...

dwarf fighter, elf wizard, halfling thief option

Optional rule idea to allow both more consistant racial abilities and more class variety at 1st-level for demi-humans: A 0-level dwarf gains infravision, slow, underground skills, and speaks Common and dwarf as the class and a -1 penalty to agility. A dwarf advancing to 1st-level can take the cleric...

Re: changing the tone of DCC?

Sorry to be so blunt, but it is what it is. Get 'em to jump in and playtest. They are adventurers after all aren't they? See if they like it, and then make decisions about tone and context. And if they don't that's all good. There are still other games out there to play. We are a community not becu...

Re: changing the tone of DCC (long but heartfelt)

The tone is what makes this game stand apart from other games. It's the first thing that caught my eye (along with the art), drew me in and made me want to play. You can tell the author has a particular vision for his game, and that speaks to game design goodness (the author knows what he wants and...

I also like the idea getting rid of weapon training and replacing it by saying certain class abilities don't work with certain weapons.

changing the tone of DCC?

I’ve been wracking my brain trying to figure out how to present DCC to my players. Weird dice can be overcome (I like them). But I feel one stumbling block is that the rules are written from the judge’s point of view to other judges and one type of judge only—the grizzled grognard. Thus the funnel c...

I also think one XP table is a good idea. Get rid of the thief %s and different XPs by level; both harken back to Ad&D and not appendix N.

Re: no magic items--shouldn't those be playtested?

Magic items are rare, unique, and "the" vs. "a". By that I mean that when you find "the" +1 longsword, you have found THE +1 longsword. There isn't such a thing as a "generic" +1 longsword. There may be a couple in the world but each has its own properties and history. core rule quote I am very gla...

Re: On average, how many goblins.....

I would think goblins would just run from a warrior with weapon and armor. If the warrior gets the jump on them, I'd think it would take five or more goblins to win. A warrior with scale and an AC of 14 means the goblins hit 25% of the time. Warrior hits goblins in leather about 50% of the time with...

Re: Demi-human classes...

I think the example of an elf's infravision and iron vulnerability speak to the need for an experienced judge in the game. I don't see any reason why a judge wouldn't allow a demihuman to have the abilities purely based on race (not just racial training) if a player asks. Maybe the full book will in...
