Re: Percentage Thief Skills

Is there a difference between a pdf on the publisher's website or an appendix? Yes, I think so. In my experience what's in the core rules is the canon to us to houserule from. I don't want a designer's houserules for his own game in the core book, give me a clear statement of intent. I have no prob...

Re: Percentage Thief Skills

Well, but what really makes the Warrior significantly better (in combat) is not only the bonus die but the MDoA. Something to keep in mind, if Thieves gained the progression to their Skills (or a mix of some kind) using polyhedral dice, the other classes wouldn't get any bonuses. Thats a key differ...

Re: Percentage Thief Skills

I'm against appendices of optional rules, I've seen how it muddies the game. Let's aim for a core game so when a person sits down at a tournament they know what they're playing. Didn't tournament play contribute to the schism that became AD&D & BD&D? ;) Back in the day, I would've been against it, ...

Re: Percentage Thief Skills

The salient mechanical elements of DCC rpg are two: 1) use of a unified difficulty-based mechanics, 2) use of funky dice within the context of the above. All classes make use of the above, except the Thief. As it stands, it's just confusing, and it really doesn't add anything. It only makes the cla...

Re: Sword and sorcery classes.

I think the Warrior does a great job of covering the Barbarian. This is the first "Fighter" class, that to me, really lets you be a bad@$$, according the fiction that inspired the game.

Pict & Decadent would be sweet.

Re: Percentage Thief Skills

For those who want to try the "d20 version" of the thief, here is the set of abilities that I was using for most of 2010, before I changed them to percentile skills. Gaah, I can't get this to display right..."best attempt" here...hopefully someone can make sense of this. If I need to I'll figure ou...

Re: Percentage Thief Skills

You're kidding. You would scrap an entire RPG and not play it just because of percentile rolls for thief skills? Wow. I know I would. I'm not saying that is the case with DCC, but my gaming time is lot less than it was (I'm sure I'm not in the minority on that, on this forum). I CAN come up with pa...

Re: Percentage Thief Skills

I must agree. The Thief % skills was the thing in the playtest that I most considered to be a reason why not to play this game (regularly). And, that's a big thing because everything else just screams, "Play me!" I'd like to see some sort of Zocchi dice alternative as well. Fighters get MdoA. Maybe...

Re: Percentage Thief Skills

That's what I wrote up above: d6/d6/d8/d8/d10 for 3 thief abilities he's great at, d3/d4/d5/d6/d7 for 3 abilities he's pretty good at, and +1/+1/+2/+2/+3 for the rest of the thieves abilities. Simple. Well, I came up with my thoughts at about 1am last night, before I read your post :) And I was thi...

Re: Percentage Thief Skills

+D30...ha! Ironically the thief skill system was d20 based for the first year of playtesting. I just changed it a month or two ago. The thief class just wasn't quite "special" enough. I think the use of the Luck die really made a difference in that. So far the reaction to % skills in games has been...

Percentage Thief Skills

I'm just not a big fan of them. Any chance of this changing? I'd much rather see a mechanic similar to the Warrior's Attack Dice. I really appreciate the different paths though.

I'll try them in play, before I tackle an alteration. I'll post my experiences.

So I just got our Free RPG Day Kit...

Let me say that, whenever I am looking forward to a new game, especially after a good deal of time, I have to put some distance between myself & it upon release....the game just can't live up to the hype in my head. I've got the DCC Aventure Starter here, & with just a quick run down of the Core Mec...

Re: Designer's Blog #3: What Do You Mean, "Vancian"?

Interesting point from ENW: http://www.enworld.org/forum/general-rpg-discussion/299107-dungeon-crawl-classics-rpg-goodman-games-10.html#post5494512 Right. Good to know that level 10 casters rule the world. Seriously, that jump in power once they hit the possibility of an ability check of 30 is huge...

Re: Designer's Blog #3: What Do You Mean, "Vancian"?

Yeah, Mr Goodman's original table has a lot more flavor, I don't deny that. But pair that with say, 10 spells per level x 9 spell levels, and the spell section of the core book will be HUGE. Besides, I'm sure GG can come up with tables a hell of a lot better than the crib notes I posted. I was just...

Re: Designer's Blog #3: What Do You Mean, "Vancian"?

Why not? Something like: Natural 1: Spell takes effect on random creature or area. 1-11: Lost. Failure. 12-13: Spell Does minimum possible damage. 14-17: Spell has standard effect. 18-19: Increase damage dice by one step. 20-23: Increase aoe or targets affected by 50% 24-27: Increase range by 50%. ...

Re: On saving throws

This response will probably be laughed straight out of town...But, I've actually gone all the way back to a single saving throw / class or race. And allowed the PC to add an ability modifier (if existent) on a per-situational basis. I love this system. It's simple and allows for attributes to be re...

Re: Handling skill check

Smathis, you've got alot of great ideas in your previous post. I think the Die ratings for skills & SKILLburn are excellent. If they're not covered in DCC RPG, you should do a supplement, even if its a small one, like early Brave Halfling PDFs. I understand your concern about Skill Ranks/Ratings get...

Re: Handling skill check

C&C has a really nice skill check system. It's not perfect. But it's a lot cleaner than vanilla 3e. Just roll over a target number and it happens. Maybe DCC can have something like that. That way results on the lower end are still relevant. You don't have characters who's bonuses are so high they'l...

Re: Handling skill check

I've toyed with treating Skills like 3E's Saves. They can be Average or Good & progress per the corresponding Save. I try to reduce subsystems in games. I do think that Skills could be placed into the BAB system, although some might prefer 1/4 Level for Average & 1/2 Level for Good Skills. And while...

Re: Question about Atribute bonuses, AC and Hit Points

Here's another experience I'd like share: DCC RPG, completely felt like playing a Sword & Sorcery story. I thought once Mongoose fixed their Conan game to the Atlantean Edition, they did a pretty good job of using D20 to emulate the genre. But DCC RPG cuts even closer. I'm truly looking forward to p...

Re: Question about Atribute bonuses, AC and Hit Points

In playtesting the game only once, I can't 100% say that this won't be a problem. However, DCC RPG uses 3D6 straight attribute rolls in order. In our playtest you were lucky to have a 10 or 11 in an attribute. And the 1 or maybe 2 characters with 1 attribute of 16 or better, had several at 8 or less...

Re: what game is most like the DCC RPG?

I's run 3.X without feats or skills. For thief skills, I'd use the option from Unearthed Arcana, where the player made half of his skills Level +3 & the other half 1/2 that value. Unless somebody wants to give us a preview of them :) Magic will have to be different, unless you want to make up the ta...
