Re: Sailors on the Starless Sea - Session Recap

These are what have surprised me in each of the three times I've run Sailors: 1) No one picked up on the censer clue, but all deduced other means to bypass the beast without too much trouble. 2) All three parties took much longer than expected figuring out how to summon the boat, and two were on the...

Re: Introductions Thread - Join the Band!

I think the 'community split' might be referring to the closing of Google Plus, which was the central place for discussing DCC. Welcome aboard, NauticalSoup, and thanks for posting your recap! I think recaps are even more important for DCC than most other systems. Some of its rules are so loosely de...

Re: Dwarf Shield Bash and Attack Die

I think the wording is intended to confirm that while your normal attacks may not use the same attack die type (one with a d20 and the other with a d14), they still use the same deed die type for all of your attacks. If you used the same result of the deed die, then all of your deeds of the round wo...

Re: Character creation - Wainwright (your dead)

In general I agree with absolutely all of that. This is really just a case of particulars for this situation: - For Portal Under the Stars, I like keeping the map to the scale that's printed (1 square = 5'). It makes the place very cramped when you toss 12-20 nobodies into the funnel. I think it add...

Re: Character creation - Wainwright (your dead)

The wainright seems super OP when dealing with traps to be honest... The two groups who I've run through A Portal Under The Stars both largely survived through clever use of a cart full of rocks. Dead are like rocks, but more... flexible. Should be very useful, at least until they start to smell. I...

Yep, your son received arguably one of the best available starting items with that roll. Who hasn't wished they had a spare body around when exploring a dungeon?

Re: when a wizard begins

Personally, I like the idea of having both wizards and clerics beginning without any sort of patron. Part of the fun of the campaign game comes from deciding if/when and how you will take the plunge into servitude.

Re: Any point in spell level?

Hmm... that makes me think: What if, when you try to learn spells of a level higher than you're supposed to learn, you roll a d50 for additional Mercurial Magic effects for each level beyond your 'grasp'...? 1st Level Elf trying to learn a 3rd Level spell, "Sure, why not? Roll a normal Mercurial ef...

Re: Patrons for non-wizards

Another thing I would consider: Patron bond is for when the PC wants to get the patron's attention and prove their worth to the patron. If a patron wants to select you, there is no need for a spell. Just roll or determine the spell result however you like. Good point. The spell is just a mechanic t...

Re: Patrons for non-wizards

My solution would probably allow anyone to seek out a temple or use a relic to attempt using the Patron Bond spell. Magic items are a great way to do that, since they can have their own in-game effect already, plus act as a relic that forces the owner to cast a bonding spell without necessarily real...

Re: Luck penalty and zero luck

The book is pretty silent on how much Luck to award or penalize, but it'd be nice to have an idea of what numbers were used in playtesting so that we have at least a statement of intent. When it says that Luck can awarded at the end of an adventure, how much are we usually talking about here? Is 3 p...

Re: Introductions Thread - Join the Band!

I started reading Tolkien in 6th grade. I finished the Silmarillion in 7th. I still think highly of my school librarian who recommended those books to me and started me down this path that I still refer to as a hobby. (I don't know if many D&D gamers still refer to it as a hobby...) FIJAGDH all the...

Re: race-as-class vs class-as-race

Now, I don't necessarily think they need to have the exact same racial abilities even if they're the same race. And, I think even if there was some overlap in roles between a human class and a race-class, that enough differences could be kept between them so they don't have the same advantages or n...

Re: race-as-class vs class-as-race

In Iron Man, 3d6-by-Crom games like OD&D, B/X and DCC, I think it's almost a given that your statistically worst characters will be the ones you remember the most fondly! In every DCC cohort there's always that one miserable cad who gets thrown to the front of every marching order and tests every tr...

Re: Any point in spell level?

It sounds like you can get what you want by simply ridding your game of spell level requirements, rather than ignoring spell levels entirely. Mechanically, spell level does serve a couple of functions—it is affected by mercurial magic, and it has a direct effect on where the threshold is for casting...

Re: race-as-class vs class-as-race

fit your character into a role that might be better for their stats. Why? Because you can as a human? "oh my int and personality are really low, so maybe I'll be a thief or warrior instead of wizard or cleric" True. Assuming your characters are starting at 0-level, then your random ability scores a...

Re: race-as-class vs class-as-race

In my game we have a dwarf cleric because the dwarf in question had a 0-level occupation that suggested a clerical path of advancement, and the player likes the whole dwarf cleric thing. In the end we found some house ruled "dwarf cleric" class from a 'zine or 'blog, then gave it a quick vetting to ...

Re: Circle of Mages

I was reading this section today and it's worth pointing out that the bit about item enchantment spells suggests that you can imbue powers from spells you don't know by letting other members of the circle lead with their own spells. To me that implies that the original intent was that only the leade...

Re: Is there a "GDQ" equivalent for DCC?

That's a great review, I think I'll pick up that module too. Unfortunately we already went through our next session, which ended up being Tower of the Black Pearl because I had it to hand. The connection from Sailors to the Tower came out really well. In the first session they had bypassed the expan...

Thanks for these suggestions, I'll definitely look into them. We haven't started yet, but I did round up a couple of friends from another group for an impromptu session of Sailors on the Starless Sea . No frills or fluff, very little improvisation, basically a playtest so that I could take notes on ...

Re: Is there a "GDQ" equivalent for DCC?

Thanks for the input. I do like that everything is designed to be standalone, it's helped me drop stuff into my own campaign pretty easily. It probably means that you can mix and match just about any of the modules and turn them into your own supermodule, too. I'm just starting to play in a 5th edit...

Is there a "GDQ" equivalent for DCC?

So my halfhearted search didn't turn up anything; sorry if there's a thread buried somewhere on the topic. I noticed that the first 6 modules are arranged sequentially by level range, from 0 to 5. Was there an implicit intent to pitch these sort of as candidates for the T/A/GDQ equivalent of DCC? Do...

Re: Introductions Thread - Join the Band!

Hi all, finally made it here. I started in the mid-'90s, first with Star Wars and Middle-earth Role Playing, then on to a string of countless others—but never D&D, since everyone was too cool for TSR in those days. That didn't come until a decade later, when I picked up copies of the first edition P...
