Re: My new DCC sandbox: The Xanthus River Valley Campaign
Nice work, love the map style, what did you use to create it? I was really interested in your wilderness travel rates and random encounter tables. It looks to be very simple and straightforward. Are you tracking navigation, getting lost food etc.? My own system is a combination of Raven Crowking's h...

Re: What's your prefered initiative tracking method for DCC
I use small folded pieces of card stock with the character's names on them. I write the initiative number on it and hang them on my GM screen in order. After each character has their turn I move that paper down to the back of the line. That way the whole table knows at a glance who is up next. I hav...

Great podcast guys! Nice flow, good audio quality etc. I listen to a variety of RPG podcasts most notably Roll For Initiative but they just don't scratch the itch like Spellburn. Keep it up!

On Thud and Blunder - An Essay by Poul Anderson
I stumbled upon this essay from Poul Anderson in a recent Reddit "Ask Historians" posting concerning: "Wrong ideas about medieval Europe in medieval fantasy" Some of his points about medieval fantasy literature vs. reality match up really well with what Goodman writes (no surpris...

Re: Animal Summoning
Working up some Summoning results for my upcoming con game, I've adapted the Familiar rules to to create some animal stats, along with using or adapting entries from the monster section. I'm really interested in checking this out if you want to post it! I didn't realize this was a problem until one...

Re: Background music for gaming
Awesome suggestions! I have several RPG Spotify playlists based on Combat, Explore, Temple etc but they were not really working for us. When you're gaming until 2-3am you need a little something more than Baldur's Gate or Conan soundtracks. Lately I've been playing Vektor and that's worked out well,...

Re: The spaces between - descriptions in published dungeons
I've run into this problem too and it's not exclusive to DCC modules. I never notice it during a read through but as soon as I'm running the game I realize the characters are plodding through a featureless hallway that I just skipped past during prep. This is where a few random details and dungeon &...

Re: How does Magic Work? (Reddit)
Thanks for the link, I don't know how I missed this as I'm a regular lurker of /r/rpg. So what's the consensus on Clerics learning new spells? I think I saw a thread around here about that... I went with random rolls similar to Wizards. One of my cleric players has a spell he's not crazy about, I'm ...

Re: Sailors on The Starless Sea - The Ale
IronWolf - It was only for those that survived! The surviving PCs took a year to study and "level up" after their adventure and this was waiting for them when they returned to town for the feast in their honor. (subsequently ruined by the BBEG  ) Finarvyn: Pumpking has one of those cl...

Sailors on The Starless Sea - The Ale
I thought you guys may get a kick out of this "prop" I made for my players. After surviving the keep and making their way back to town the players were rewarded with an ale brewed in their honor by the legendary halfling brewer Pint Bingleton. For those that are curious, it's actually Sout...

Re: If and when the PC's Fail
One rule of thumb that I like to use is this: If you cannot live with the consequences of the PCs failing in an adventure, don't use those consequences in an adventure. That quote is seriously Gygaxian in nature! I love it. Just as an aside, your blog and write ups have been instrumental in my rece...

Re: first run of Starless Sea
This is fascinating. I just ran the first half of this adventure for some seasoned players and they were overly cautious too. They found the cache but thought it was a grave and left it alone for now. They didn't approach the altar to pry the gems off, etc. They left the incense burner behind due to...

Re: Barrowmaze using DCC RPG
I am converting as-needed. Much of the conversion is presentation rather than substance. I would say that something like 90% is presentation. I too will be using Barrowmaze as a major adventure site in my "sandbox" I been building based on your series of excellent posts: S is for Sandbox ...

Re: Killing the Cleric (and a few others)
This reminds me of the free Warrior, Rogue & Mage game. It's "classless" as the three major attributes are, naturally, Warrior, Rogue & Mage. How you divide your points among those three attributes defines your "class" as it were. Elegant system. I almost adopted it but t...

So whither the skill check requiring either skilled climber or a nat 20 + 18 Dex? I wrote it with visions of a sheer pit, slick with muck. Literally impossible for all but an insanely talented (or skilled) Am I right in assuming the only way to make a DC23 check for climbing is if the PC is a Thief...

Thanks for the write up, as someone who hasn't played an RPG since AD&D 2e, and will be running this module soon, I found it helpful in visualizing this crazy dungeon. Was this the end of the session? How much play time?
